Which Outboard??

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I am new to the forum and need some help.  I am looking at two different Skeeter SX180's and need help with the outboards.  One has a 115 Yamaha 2 stroke costs less, the other has a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke and is more.  I have no experience with 4 strokes, but is the 4 worth the extra cash??  Thanks alot everyone.

I'd take a 2 stroke over a 4 any day. The 4 strokes are quieter but the 2 strokes are better runners.

Welcome aboard!

My fishing partner has a 2004 Yamaha 225, 4 stroke on a 2180 BayRanger. The motor is powerful, quiet and has required no maintance other than an oil change.

I'd buy the 2 stroke.....

I am leaning more towards the 2 stroke, but I didn't have that much exposure, so I thought that I would ask about it.  If anyone else sees this please keep replying.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I'd opt for the 2 stroke and if possible jump to a 150hp. I couldn't tell by your post whether it is a new or used rig.

tuff question.  Id say 2 stroke.  Especially if your doing any tournaments.  It will get you to your spot faster.  I would also go with the max allowable horsepower.

To explain my answer further, the SX180 series is rated for 130 hp so you're underpowering by 10%.  The 4 stroke is a heavier motor and less torquey so you're asking this 4 stroker to lift it's additional weight + the boat out of the water, you're going to have a slower hole shot with the 4 than with the 2 not to mention a little less top end speed.  The 2 stroke would be the better bet if you're going to underpower.

If you are fishing tourn. pick the two stroke.

If you are just fishing for pleasure get the four.

Consider the weight also. I switched from a 2 to 4 stroke on one of our boats and after that I had to get my mother in law to sit in the bow so I could see where I'm going and get it up on a plane. :o

The other half of the disaster was there was no insect filter in the air intake so the mud daubler wasps decided that the honeycomb air filter and the cooling fins on the cylinders werea perfect condominium and proceeded to fill everything up! eek.gif
