12lb or 15lb line?

Featured Replies

I'm going to give some Berkley Big Game a shot this season and am trying to decide if I should get the 1175YD spool of 12lb or the 900YD spool of 15lb. This is going on a multi-purpose setup for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs and T-rigs. I don't fish too much heavy cover but when I do, I have another setup with braid for that. 12lb is .014 diameter and the 15lb is .015 and wonder if that .001 will have any real affect on castability/stiffness, strength, etc. They're both the same price but I'd get an extra 275yds of 12lb. Help me choose guys....thanks in advance.

I was in the same boat as you. I was using 15lb Big Big Game and decided to switch 12lb for the extra capacity and casting distance. Both are minimal, but where I fish there is not a lot of cover, so 12lb is more than sufficient.

I use spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and chatterbaits for the majority of my fishing as well as t-rigged worms.

For what you mentioned, the 12 is perfect, especially given the stretch and the fact that the break strength is higher

I was thinking the 15 would be the better option to get the added break strength and durability, but that the 12 would be better for manageability (i.e. limpness) and I'd get more line. I also think I'm going to try the Lo-Vis Green for the first time and see if line color matters at all. Most waters I'm fishing are stained to slightly murky.

For all the more Big Game costs per spool, why not buy both and experiment to find out what works best for you?

X2.  I use 12# on the majority of my MH rigs.

15lb should be perfect, for me personally 12 sounds alittle light. but would work still.

Moss green 15# big game is my choice, I tryed the 12 and the 15 is better for where I fish stronger and doesn't get frayed up as easy.

I only use two lines

Big game 15# ( every bait other then frogs)

PP 40# braid (frogs only)

you can't go wrong either way. been using big game as long as I can remember and 12 OR 15 LB. is what I use 95% of the time

Go with the 12lb big game. The dia of big game is already on the high side for line diameter and the lines breaks at a much higher poundage than it is listed as. If you were deciding between a line that is smaller in dia that actually broke at the listed poundage I would suggest 15lb.

I wonder what the difference in breaking strength is?

Not sure. But I hung my 12lb line on a log and my 15lb drag slipped without the line breaking.

For your situation..I'd go 12...it's strong, I used BG last year and liked it. If it came in clear blue fluorescent..I'd still be using it. I switched to Stren and like it a little better than BG.

If that breaking strength of 12lb is upwards of 15, I may just go with the 12lb line. Maybe it'll be easier to cast, assuming it's a little more limp.

I use 12 lb on most of my combos . 15 lb is good for texas rigs and jigs .
