Rod tip broke off. Was it my leader knot that caused it?

Featured Replies

I broke the tip off my mojo bass rod last night, not sure what happened but I made a cast and heard a crack and a splash. Lure and rod tip flew away. I had a 20lb mono leader tied to 40lb braid. The mono leader was still attached to the lure looks like it broke off where the knot was. Luckily it was a floater and windy so I got the lure back. This was my first time using a mono leader. I noticed the knot gets hung up on the guides. I used an Albright knot. Could the knot have got hung up and snapped the rod tip off?

How old was the rod? More than likely it was a defect or was damaged and was bound to break sooner or later. I don't think your leader knot broke your rod.

I use way bigger knots with way bigger line without problem. I think the rod was already cracked. What is the action on the rod?

How heavy of a lure were you throwing and what's the top end of the lure rating on the rod?

My guess would be that the blank suffered from previous damage.

Even when care is taken, rods do get banged around during loading, unloading and transit.

They even get stepped on inadvertently when lying on the deck ( I think it was Bill Dance who stepped on 3 at once).

Rods can't scream so we get no warning, but once ruptured a blank can fail anytime thereafter.

Why didn't I think of that  :D

Ok kidding aside unless this was the first time you used the rod it got dinged at some point. An inadvertent smack on a cleat or flipping jig is all it takes. Damage imperceptible to the naked eye can cause failure later on.

Well I went to bass pro and they were out of stock on the same model rod I had. I got a mojo bass 7'6 MH mod-fast. Its a lite flipping rod, but I'm hoping its versatile enough for what I do. I wanted something that could do topwater, chatterbaits, smaller swimbaits, big worms, and my bbz rats

That's a key point, because manufacturing defects typically show up the first time the blank is stressed.
