I tried my new 68MXF Avid X when I went walleye fishing, with heavier 5/8 oz jigs. It felt spongy, but it has 8lb mono.

 

Also should I have a flouro leader on some of these if I use braid? I didn't know if the sight or stretch maters of the flouro leader for bass.

 

What should I put on this 68MXF for most bass fishing?

 

What line would you use on a 610MLXF for drop shot? I got 15lb PP superslick that I havent put on yet. Aqua green.

 

How about a 7ft MF for tubes, heavy plastics and maybe crankbaits what would you use?

 

I didn't realize there was such a difference until I rigged my St Croix LT with braid for vertical jigging. Wow. Now I realized there is a correct line for everything.

I'll take on this part.  I use two identical, similar rods for drop shot, AVS63MLXF and I have them spooled with 6# Invisx, the other with 6# Tatsu.  Both are what I've found to be the best for drop shotting.

I use 8lb fluoro on my 6'8 and 7' medium spinning rods.  I have two spools for my drop shot combo, one has 6lb fluoro, the other has 15lb braid with an 8lb fluoro leader.  I hardly use any of these but when I do, they all work just fine.

Thanks, Ill have to try my 63 vs the 610 and see what I think. I think the 610 is purpose built for DS, but I though Id be comfortable with the 63 doing it also.

That line is spendy. Any downside to it? 99% of my fishing has been with 8lb trilene XL for comparison.

I use the shorter rod to stay in the cone, I'm strictly vertical fishing, so no need for length.  Most guys like a 6-10 or longer for drop shot.

It's pricey, but lasts longer than mono.  Invisx is 4 years old, the Tatsu is almost 2.

I use a similar setup for DS when I'm casting a bit more shallow, in sparse to moderate weeds.  Leader is about as ling as the rod, and the dropper can be nearly 3', since it's more a horizontal setup.  I'm no walleye fisherman, but I'm that it work fine,

Around 3 or 4 ft.  Nothing too crazy.

I fish a dobyns 742 extreme drop shotting walleye. I run 15 pp and about 8 sunline sniper floro.  Man I love that rod

Never fished a St. Croix, but all the reading I do says they fish heavier than rated.  Therefore I could be way off on this assumption.  The 6'8" MXF is rated for a maximum of 5/8 oz.  I realize this is only a guideline and that some rods handle heavier than their rating with no problem.  Only you and others with this rod would know for sure, but maybe the total weight of the 5/8 oz. jig (cuz total weight will be more) is why the rod feels spongy...not the line.

Yes that's a good thought, but the 63 MXF Legend tournament next to it is fishing a 3/4 oz just fine, or at least not spongy. The 63 has braid and we were jigging in about 25-25 FOW. Actually my LT 63 ML XF also fished a 5/8oz (just for fun) better than the Avid that had mono. Trying to remember back 2 weeks, but I think when I made that comparison is when I thought maybe it was the mono. You just couldn't feel any solid bottom contact with the rod with mono.

I use 14LB Braid and a 8 LB leader fluorocarbon leader usually around six feet long.  Works great for me and it definitely not spongy.

Obviously braid is going to give you more sensitivity and no stretch.  TT's review of the Helios MF...also rated to 5/8 oz....said it handled up to 1 oz. so I don't doubt the St. Croix can handle over 5/8 oz.  since everyone mentions they fish heavier than rated.  If you don't want to go to braid, a line such as CXX or Platinum may give you a better feel. Unfortunately they are going to have some memory.  I assume you are talking about a spinning rod.
