how to tell lure weight

Featured Replies

I bought a rod-reel combo, Shakespeare tiger, 7 foot, medium action, line rating of 8-15 lb, but I can't seem to find the lure rating for the rod. Can anyone help me out because I want try my hand at muskie/pike fishing and don't want to break my rod or use to heavy of a lure.

thanks in advance

you should be ok with lures up to 3/4oz, maybe even 1oz on that rod. you can always just try it out yourself. keep throwing heavier stuff until it feels uncomfortable

ok, thanks I thought about using some bank weight to see the amount of flex in the rod tip and see if I was comfortable with the amount of flex.

I'd guess you'd be pretty safe with a range of lures between 1/8 - 3/4 oz. weights. Do a Google search on that particular rod. I'm sure it will give the manufacturers web site. On there you should find similar recommendations.

I tried to google but all that came up was places to buy another one without any lure weight spec.

The ratings are arbitrary so there's no formula or anything. Line weights like that I'd guess 1/4-3/4. You might be able to stretch it on either end. Probably a little light powered for pike and Muskie unless you're targeting smaller fish.

Frankly I know nothing about the Shakespeare Tiger Rod.

However, based on generic Blank Specifications:

8 to 15-lb line suggests a 'Medium' power blank with an 1/8 to 3/8 oz lure weight range.

In the absence of an industry standard though, these are only ballpark specifications.

tiger rods are indestructable . Cast larger and larger lures until you find the sweet spot.

Looked at BPS for the Ugly Stik Tiger Spinning rods and depending on the model Lure weight is rated between 1/2 up to 6 OZ.

"With actions designed for jetty and plug fishing, these rods make a great live bait choice for large catfish, stripers, and bigwater game fish."

I have a tiger combo but I just use it when fishing for cats. It's going to be pretty hard to break that rod. It's similar to an ugly stik so there probably isn't a lure that's too heavy for it so just be reasonable.
