Happy Father’s Day to all of the Fathers out there!

My dad has Alzheimer’s and no longer remembers who I am.  But I remember him and the times he took me fishing as a youth.  Instead of spending money on himself, he would spend his money on his kids (I have a brother and a sister).  For me, he would take me fishing (he probably had more important things to do, or things he rather be doing).  He would spend money to rent a boat and we would fish mainly for trout.  He didn’t know anything about fishing, and despite my teenage knowledge that I was the better fisherman, he would often catch the biggest fish or the most fish (LOL).  As an adult, my dad and I would go fishing and I would always hope that he would catch something (so that he would continue to go fishing with me).  He no longer remembers much of anything, so I can’t reminisce with him about our fishing trips.  If it were possible now, I wish I could have a day with my dad, where he would remember who I am, and we could go fishing.

So, dad, I hope you know that I appreciate the sacrifices you made to make your son happy by taking him fishing so many years ago.  Happy Father’s Day.

My dad instilled in me my love for fishing, not the lure chucking bass chasing that I do now but live bait line watching for cats and carp. The best part was the stop on the way home for a hamburger seasoned with sweet black nightcrawler dirt from my fingers.  (Dad wasn't too strict about sending me to wash my hands).

 

 

My Dad too had that #@!$ disease ... I was fortunate to get to go on one last fishing trip with him to the Queen Charlette Islands in BC before this disease hit.  He was a good man too....One of his favorite lines was It's good to be out here...don't always have to catch fish.  Note:  He was not a great fisherman...!!!  But a good man.

happy fathers day to all of the dads, and  the fathers we were so fortunate to have.  moms seem to raise us, wipe our noses,console us and teach us over our young lives . but fathers seem to be the guidance and inspiration that make us the men you are or have become. just remember that your influence and the respect that we all have for you will always be cherished and remembered. thanks for being great fathers! we can only hope to fill your shoes.

Bass302, I thank you for the post, I feel your pain.  I have a father 92 and a mother 90 both in a moderate stage of the disease.  It is great to have them for as long as I have, but sad to see what it does to their bodies.  I cherish everyday they are still with us.  God bless you, and your family.

Happy fathers day

In August it will be three years since my father died. He was 53. On father's day I paddled to a spot we used to fish together when I was a kid. Within three casts of being there I caught a nice smallie. I just held the fish for a second, looked up, and said "thanks Dad."

What a bittersweet thread. The Father's in this thread passed their knowledge and love of fishing to their son's. Now it is our turn.

 

My dad is still here. We don't get to go fishing as often as I would like. His parts don't work as well as they once did. Getting in an out of a canoe would be impossible.

 

We try to take a charter out once a season for some Smallmouth Bass fishing. It's times like that I treasure and am thankful for.
