Can you effectively fluke fish on a windy lake???

Featured Replies

I have been trying to master all fishing techniques (I havent mastered one yet... :lol-045:)   Any how, I am on a Fluke kick right now, and I am having more trouble/no success with Fluke fishing then other plastics. The lake I fish is usually fairly windy (hence the reason there are windmills all around), and when I fish Flukes, I feel like I am not getting the right action because my line is a sail my Fluke never really sinks. Now the obvious answer is to add weight but I read that weight killed the action of the Fluke. i am a grinder and will spend all day at a spot if that is what it takes, I spent 4- five hour days only Fluke fishing , anywhere from flats to drop offs and not caught one fish.  . I feel like if i add wieght then I am going to have to use it more like jerk bait then the natural wounded/dying bait, therefore should i just buy jerkbaits?

What kind of weight and what technique should I use with weight on my Fluke??

A small bit of split shot, a couple feet up the line won't kill the action, and will help keep the bait down in the wind.

Not what I would do, but if you insist on fishing a fluke in windy conditions, either find some active shallow fish or go with a weighted  hook. The best way to "master" a technique is to fish it when fish want it.

Keep your rod tip down to avoid the "line sail" issue. Also try casting with the wind if at all possible.

Fishing it in windy conditions will make you more proficient.

If you don't peg a weight a couple feet up, you can use a heavier hook and do 4 or 5 speed cranks and pause...that will get the nose down a couple feet.  Drop the tiip and really  slow down the retrieve.  Got 10 the other day in 10 MPH  wind
