Looking For A Spinning Rod For Slider Heads/Shaky Heads

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a nice spinning rod for slider/shaky heads to pair with a Stradic Ci4+. I will also be using senkos and weightless trick worms. I will be using this setup from a boat, bank and farm ponds. I don't mind spending a little more money($300) as long as it's worth it. I'm very interested in the  Dobyns Champion XP Spinning Rod 702ML. What do you guys recommend for these applications?

Thanks,

Billy

I fish my Sliders on a St Croix Avid 6'3" M/XF, Daiwa Exceler 2500 and 6lb Trilene XT or Fireline 4/10.  That is my dedicated Slider rig but I sometimes use the 6'8" Avid M/XF instead.

I throw Shakey heads and senkos on a Sierra 703 and it fishes them just fine. One thing is my Dobyns is pretty tip heavy with a Stradic FK 3000 on it so I would bet it will be terrible with a Ci4 on there. I am actually going to get a heavier reel for the rod to better balance it out.

I already have the Stradic Ci4, what rod would balance well with it?

I am going to get something with a full cork handle on it (my budget is about $200 so I am going with an Avid most likely).

The weight of the senkos may overwhelm the 702 so check out the 703

i actually have a brand new with tags Champion Extreme HP 703s that I need to sell if you're interested

I have that reel on a loomis e6x M/Xf and reach for it all the time.

The e6x can be had for around 169.00

Wagster are you familiar with Anglers Express near Timonium. You and I are blessed to have a terrific tackle shop so close to us. They stock Dobyns ( although they are a bit low on stock at the moment, I was there this morning LOL) as well as Irod, Powell and many more. My suggestion is to look them up, then take you and your reel in and try it out on some rods. Call ahead and ask if they have a 703 SF in any of the series in stock. If they do not. they will be happy to get one in since they usually stock at least 2 all the time.  One is usually in the Fury and one is usually either a Sierra or Champion XP seies. If you call them many times the owner Eric will answer the phone himself.

The easiest way to find them is take 83 N to Padonia Road. Get over to the left lane and turn left at the light where the Irish Pub is on your left. Take that road till it dead ends (1 block) then turn left onto Old Padonia Rd. He is located in a strip of buildings on the left hand side of the road.  If you have not been in there before it is amazing what he has built up in less than 2 years.

Thanks for the heads up!

I just got the St Croix TBS610MXF.  It's specifically designed for shakey head fishing.  I have a Stradic FK on it and it's pretty awesome.

I fish slider heads ALOT   I have 2 rods that I favor for slider fishing.  (90% of the time I'm fishing the quarter ounce spider slider pro head, the one that has the slightly stronger hook)

I have a 7' MH rod that I got on sale from Academy Sports in the close outs last January, for $19.99   It is on the Medium side of MH and it is paired with a Curado 50 E and 10 lb Abrazx.  Or I have a 5'9" Fenwick spinning rod - rated as Medium action/extra fast tip, but it is on the heavy side of medium, IMO.  That gets paired with a 1000 size Shimano Spirex or Sahara and 14 lb Fireline.

IMO either one of these rigs works great for throwing slider heads, admitting I don't throw lighter than quarter ounce very often.

(The Academy Sports rod replaced a $100 or so Falcon Eakins Jig Special, which I broke last year and haven't got around to replacing yet.  Falcon does have a deal where they will replace out of warranty rods at a reduced cost, I just haven't got around to it yet)
