Defend swinging wobble/FTB heads?

Featured Replies

For the life of me, I can't see how a swing jig results in any different action then would clamping a "split" bullet weight onto a snap.

Anyone?

Maybe not necessarily the action, but that it comes through cover better. It gets hung up less in rocks because of the football shaped head vs the narrow bullet weight.

Cause I like em ;)

I'm not sure what there is to defend. There are situations where both presentations would be appropriate.

The flat, wide head is going to come through the rocks better, as well as making the bait ride better and be less prone to tipping over on it's side. The wire is poured into the head, so it's going to be more structurally sound than a snap with a weight clamped onto it.

Not sure how good I'd feel about clamping something onto a snap? Seems like it would be easy to damage the snap and/or your line in the process.

I pour my own swing heads because it's one of my favorite presentations, so I'm pretty biased towards it, but if you can make a weight crimped onto a snap work similar for you, nobody is going to stop you just because you're "supposed" to do it differently.

What Catt said......because I like them.  Don't like them?  Don't use them.

They're just overpriced imo. I've done the snap/split rig thing for years. Never gets hung. The weight just comes off on a bad snag. Which is good. I sand the bottom flat so it rides even. Cylinders work well also

Should probably add if anyone decided to try it,

**always wear a filtered ventilation mask when sanding lead**

Quality swinging football heads are widely available for $2 to $3 each from TW and other retailers...Probably even cheaper if you hunt around, wait for sales, or pour your own.  Yes, I'm sure a single hook and whatever rig you add to it will be cheaper, but you're talking dollar/cent margins, not like a $20 to $1 difference.

IMO, if you're intending to use the actual 'Biffle-style' technique, you actually do need to use one of the swinging football heads to get the best action, deflection, and snag-resistance.

But if your system is working, keep on rockin' ;)

I could see where cost would make you shy away, especially if you like dragging them through rocks like I do. They cost me less than $.50 apiece to pour though, so losing one hurts way less except when I start thinking about having to pour more.
