Any recommendations for a good spinning reel? I mainly use spinning rods when fishing soft plastics, so maybe something with a lower gear ratio?

 

Also, while I'm asking, I am making my own lures. I need a source of good cheap silicon, if anyone knows any suppliers.

I like Shimanos in the 2500 size.

Pflueger president is arguably the best bang for the buck. 

One can often find the past models of the Pfluegers on Ebay or big box stores on sale, too. I  have the Patriarch which I got for about 50% and it is a very nice reel.

 

Stradics are very nice, but you won't find many deals on them.  If I were to buy a reel right now, I'd look for discount Pfluegers.

Another vote for the President! Great reels. You can spend a lot more but it's doubtful you will experience better performance. I've switched from the Shimano's to Pfluegers. I'm very pleased.

I have three president reels. Very good reels. Never had any issues with them.
