I'm on a bit of a tight budget so I need to know if I have everything right before I buy some fluorocarbon. I know that monofilament is recommended for top water baits, but I will only have one reel to put line on.

 

Can using a popper effectively be possible with fluorocarbon? or is it not worth bothering?

 

The reason why I ask this is because the majority of baits I use are crankbaits, senkos, and other things that go underwater. I want to use top water baits on occasion also. 

Faster moving ones like a buzzbait can be. It drags the nose down too much on slower moving baits like a popper. I prefer braid for all my topwaters except a buzzbait. 

If you are on a budget and use multiple techniques with one line type then don't use fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon sinks, so poppers and walking style topwaters aren't going to work the same. There was a pro by the name of Chad Griffin that won an Elite series event on Oneida in '09 using a popper on 20lb fluorocarbon, he did so because he wanted a heavy line but only had fluorocarbon in a line that heavy. The only reason it worked is he was working the popper super fast like a crankbait, he even said had he had to slow it down the fluorocarbon would have just kept pulling the nose under making it useless, other than that one time he only used mono for topwater.

I have Hybrid on one of my rods and using a topwater works fine.  I'd say since you are on a tight budget just go braid with a leader when needed.

Yes, you can use fluorocarbon for any topwater bait. I've tried it with a popper whenever I've fished some small local ponds and only had one rod with me. It works, and I've caught fish, however, the action was terrible and on long casts, the long lengths of fluorocarbon in front of the popper really pull it nose down and kill the action.

Lots of fish have been caught over the years on good old nylon mono fishing all types of baits.. just saying. A good spool of mono costs less than a good spool of FC too.

I would probably set your rod up with braid or a good copolymer line.

"They" say you should not use fluoro as a leader with topwaters. Hmmm....I have. No problems, no worries. I really do believe people like to overthink some things, especially when it comes to fishing. Personally, I use braid with heavy fluouro leader and have not had any difficulties. But that's just me.

I don't know about using it as a leader. I do know that using fluorocarbon for walking baits is a bad idea. It will ruin the action.

Yes.  If you are working the popper very slowly, try holding your rod tip up to work the bait.

FC is pretty much my line of choice for everything except for walking/slow moving/popping topwater baits. put the FC on your jig/worm rod and yo zuri hybrid on the moving bait/topwater rod.

If you are on a budget 832 braid is a good compromise as it is not as boyant as other braids and can be used with plastics with the addition of a leader

Milos, you are the guy with the telescoping spinning rod combo using 6 lb line. Your rod isn't a good choice for bass lures becuase of it's action....too slow to work a top water lure unless you make a steady retrieve. Don't waste more money on your outfit by considering FC line, it will cause you nothing but headache. You might be able to use Trilene XL 8 lb mono that will work for everything you use, as long as you keep lure weights under 3/8 oz.

think about upgrading your rod to a 1 piece medium fast action spinning rod. I am not familiar with site sponsor KastKing, I am familiar with Dobyns Fury FR703 S @ $109.
