Trailer Facelift

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

as the fishing season is fixing to start up, i want my rig to look good as i pull it up to the lake. anybody have any advice on a way to restore my trailer without having to take my boat off? if not, is there a way i can get my boat off without having water to put it in? thanks guys

Not hard to get the boat off the trailer, but a little more information may be helpful.  What type of boat, what type of trailer, what are you looking to do to the trailer?  how big is your boat.  Let us know and we can make some suggestions.

My boat is a 1985 18' fiberglass Bumble Bee with a 150 hp Mariner outboard. For the trailer, i would like to repaint it and place a new jack and winch on it. The running boards look fine and and feel sturdy enough. thanks.

Not hard to get the boat off the trailer,

I'm wondering how you do that?  :-?

If the old trailer is rusted you really need to have it sandblasted.  Not a good idea to have the boat on the trailer when you're doing that.  :)

The trailer isn't rusted. Its just the paint looks faded.

I had some work done on my old boat - I took it to a shop where the boat was lifted off the trailer.  You may want to do that to get the best results.

I did my '84 Ranger Trail last summer with the boat still on it. I sanded some areas and then primed the thing several coats, then spray painted and then put a clear coat enamel even more coats looks great. The only problem I had was with the area between the side bunk, the trailer and wheel well. Kinda tricky lying on your back/stomach hitting that area. I had go to the lake oand launch fished for awhile to let dry spray paint  and fish some more to dry. Good Luck!

The easiest way to remove the boat from the trailer is to lower the trailer tung to the ground.  Place supports under the rear of the boat(cynderblocks work well).  Once the rear is supported raise the bow as high as you can get it.  Now support the front from the sides.  Start to remove the trailer from under the boat.  Support the boat as you continue to remove the trailer.  It is accutually easier to do then to describe.

Good Luck,

TD
