iRod Fiber Fred's Magic Stick

Featured Replies

I have one of these rods and was just wondering if it could handle this...

That's a Mattlures Ultimate Gill which checks in at 1.9oz. My rod says it's lure weight range is 1/2oz. - 2oz. If it can, could i use my Tatula CT Type-R 8.1:1 reel and 50lb braid with this lure?

Try the U2. That rod tops out at 1.5 ozs...

Really? It clearly says 2oz. max lure weight on the rod. Shouldn't a rod at least be able to handle the lure weight it's specs list from the company?

Yes. Really.

I have the fred's magic stick in genesis 2.

I also have, and fish, swimbaits that range in weights from 1 oz to ~14 oz.

So this is just misrepresentation from the company pure and simple?

I also have the Genesis version of that rod and throw Hudd 68 Specials (~2oz) on it and the rod handles it just fine.

As others have stated, you are good throwing baits up to 2oz. I personally would cast overly hard, more of a lot cast and you should be fine.

Oh I think it'll cast 2 oz baits just fine*.. But there are differences between casting, fishing, setting the hook, and fighting/ landing a fish.

*haven't tried it myself

Not familiar with the Fiber series Irod IRF754F, the IRG754F works OK with Hudd Gil's* and Matt's Soft series U2 Gills and haven't tried the Ultimate series Gills. The issue isn't casting, it's getting a solid hook set with the heavy wire hook.

What line do you plan to use?

Tom

* I modified my Hudd Gil's adding a Size 2 treble hook (Butch Brown style) to the top of the head because of missed hook sets.

Lure ratings are a guide line.  I am not sure that makers always do the required work (Is casting considered work?) before labeling their rods.  Some are spot on.  Then you read a test where a 1/4-3/4 oz. rod handles 1-1/4 oz. with no problem.  Or like one of my rod's with a 3/8 oz. rating on the low end that can barely cast a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait a decent fishing distance.  BTW, this rod's high end is listed as 1-1/4 oz.  I tried a 1-1/2 oz. jig (only because Dick's didn't have a 1-1/4 oz. jig), and didn't dare do more than use a lob with that weight.

You either need to test the rod's limits yourself or rely on someone you trust that has used the rod extensively.

50lb Sunline FX2 braid and a Tatula CT Type-R 8.1:1 reel.

I can't help your u with the lure, but I'm looking into getting an iRod fiber. Are they any good for the price?

You got probably one of the more informed answers on this forum.  @deep knows his swimbaits.
