starting cold motor

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 1997 50 HP Evinrude.  Sometimes it is a little tough to start first thing in the morning after sitting for a week or 2.

Is it OK to start in high throttle position?  Or do I need to start in neutral, then once running put in high throttle?

thanks

Larry

If it's a carburated motor, (not sure when the converted to the ficht with the 50's) Yes, it's ok to start in high throttle, probably be hell to start without it in high throttle. Just be sure to slow it down once it gets running.  1,500 rpm is about all you want to turn a motor in neutral.   Also want ot make sure the bulb is pumped up firm.

If mine sets for more than a couple of weeks, it won't start without using the fast idle.

  • 2 weeks later...

i was always told that my inline 6 merc was a hard starting engine. What i did was trim all the way down pumped up the  gas 3 times and then choked it and she would fire off. That after a 9 month sits for 5 years so i must have been doing something right.

Also dran the gas out of the bowls after every use but some will disagree with that just my .o2 cents

Mine as well.
