How should I set up my units on my boat?

Featured Replies

I'm rigging a new Crestliner Storm 1600 and I'm having a dilemma: I have two Garmin Echomap 73SV units, one is CHIRP and one isn't. I've had the non-chirp unit for two years and it's loaded with waypoint. The CHIRP unit is brand new.

heres my question: which unit should I put at the console, and which at the bow? Which transducer should be at the transom, and which on the TM?

im thinking CHIRP at console and it's transducer at transom, and put the non-chirp at the bow and use its transducer on the TM for Maps/sonar.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Because they both use the same connectors and mounting brackets, it really doesn't make any difference which one you put where. You probably will not see much difference between them. But, after you mount them, It would only take a couple of minutes to unplug them and switch them. Then you can decide which way you prefer.

Follow up question: what about the CHIRP transducer? Should that one be the one I idle and scan with (for detail)?

My bad. I wasn't aware that the transducers for CHIRP were different. If it were me, I'd put the CHIRP unit on the dash because I almost never fish in very deep water. The place you'll see differences between CHIRP and non-chirp is mainly in deep water.

Scott's right.  The CHIRP feature is primarily designed for very deep water (40+ feet).  The one with the CHIRP feature would be better at the console while your moving from one spot to another.

When you get a chance could you post some screen shots of structure? I've been considering the 73sv echomap units myself.

I already have some from my Echomap. However, I can't post them here for some reason (only letting me upload .73mb and I have zero attachment.)

if you have an email or cell number, I'll send some to you.
