Undersized rod for bait

Featured Replies

I know this is definitely less than ideal, but I was wondering if it's feasible to throw a 2 & 1/3oz swimbaits on a rod rated for 1.5oz. the rod is a dobyns fr735c and the bait is a Huddleston 68 rof 12.

Is this doable or am I flat out asking for trouble?

I'd add another rod, but I fish from a kayak and I carry way too much as is.

Not a good idea. Not only is it going to be overloading the rod, it's going to be much harder to get a proper hookset with an underpowered rod on that bait.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking about driving the hook.

I have also been looking at the weedless hudd shads. Those seem like they'd work, but the durability seems like an issue. Does anyone know of a more durable equivalent to this that is also weedless, matches the profile and doesn't go over 1.5oz?

The hud shads work amazing if you can find them, and the grass minnow is wonderful as well.  They do get tore up and last about 10ish fish.  They get bit and in times when you need to pull them out to save a day they are worth every penny.

I haven't found a bait very similar to the Hudd shads, but I've gone through lots of them on the first fish or even the first bite without landing the fish. A 3.8" swing impact fat on a belly weighted screwlock swimbait hook is about the best replacement I've found.

Thanks BB. That's kind of what I worried about lol. I'm not tourny fishing, I've just had some rough days. I see at least one shad every time I go out floating around that is this size. I have no idea if this is what they're eating.

I have a 735c I use for frogs. Last week bought some bigger hard bodied swim baits and used the 735c to throw them on, the rod was under powered on a S-168 at 1 5/8oz. I am now in market for swimbait rod to handle 1 to 4 or 5 oz, Dobyns has a DC795 that handles 1 - 5 oz that looks perfect.
