Just watched a YouTube video the other day of a guy in Florida doing a 'catch and cook' style video and he walked down to his backyard pond and started pulling out huge bullfrogs left and right using.........a top water frog.

 

(Believe he had a baby pad crasher and some type of mini or micro frog)

 

These things were literally chasing down the bait as he's dragging it on top of pads and scum. I had never heard of or seen this before and wanted to know if this is a common technique?

 

Anyone else try this before and if so any tips/tricks?

When my brother and I were little, we dangled this tiny spinner right above the scum and watched the frogs swarm it. I have to try that again 'cause it was a blast!

Not on purpose.  You just need to have the big ones around, and tease them like you would a cat.

Bullfrog are super aggressive and dumb as a post. I've seen them eat all sorts of baits. I used to use a bright colored grub on a weightless thin wire hook, just thread the grub on the hook. We'd keep them in a mesh bag with a drawstring after we caught them.

We used to catch them on floating frogs all the time; a fly rod with a little piece of foam or felt is more effective.

 

They will literally eat anything that moves next to them.  My dad caught one last year that had a blackbird in its mouth; not sure how he caught the bird but he still hit me dad’s offering.

There's a certain patch of weeds at a pond that I fish that you can't even put a topwater frog near without a real bull frog chasing it down. 

As a kid I used to catch huge bullfrogs by dragging big nightcrawlers across the duckweed on the surface of a neighborhood pond in NY. Twenty years later I went back to the same pond with two of my kids. The frogs were still there. This time we used barbless hooks. The kids definitely enjoyed the enterprise.

There are a couple of farm ponds where I cannot fish with a frog. I'll have 5 or 6 bullfrogs going after the bait.

He’s not from Florida.  Those were homegrown Nebraska frogs.

Sure do! As soon as the frog hit the pads, I would have 3-4 hone right in on it.  Tough for them to get it in their mouths but they are persistent.

That's crazy, do you ever eat them?

I had them in New Orleans one time, but never caught them to eat.  I just let them go.  A lot of guys "hunt" them with .22 in this spot, they fill up small coolers with them.
