Do you have any idea what glide baits you are planning to use, weights?

what is your budget?

You might consider a moderate fast rod for glide baits with treble hooks. You want a rod with a parabolic action to keep fish pinned once hooked.

When you say heavy, are you talking S-Waver 168 heavy, Deps 250 heavy...or Roman Made Mother Heavy? And like Dwight said I would shy away from a fast action rod. You are just setting yourself up for disappointment IMO. Last thing you want with a bait that weighs half a pound is the fish coming up and completely unloading your rod every time it shakes it's head and having the full weight of the bait thrashing back and forth working the treble hooks out.

Any good swimbait rod rated for 1-5 oz should work as long as you stay within 2 1/2 oz.

Irod Swimbait Jr. IRG783SB or Dobyns Fury FR795 SB are around $120-$150 price point.

My fishing partner uses a Megabass SRD and throws a hinkle shad that weights 5.5 ozs and he is in love with the setup.  Boated a 3.4 and a 5lber today.  With big baits you have to have the power to get big hooks and get them moving.  THIS IS NOT crank bait fishing.  I dont fish baits as heavy and i am running an avid 7'4" heavy.  I love the rod for Swaiver 168's and baits less than 2oz.  I don't advise you go under powered but way overpowered is a lot heavier than it needs to be and will kick your but in short order.  Having a rod in the 2-3 oz range is a great place to start with the smaller cheaper baits to get a taste.
