casting rod for heavy-ish jerkbaits

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a casting rod for 5/8-1 oz jerkbaits.  With the rod, I'd throw 5/8 oz lures 50% of the time and 1 oz lures the other 50% of the time. A rod with a short butt and fast action would be great. Ideally, the rod's length would be between 6'8" and 7'2". I use braid with a mono or fluoro leader, so the guides should be able to handle a leader knot. Price isn't a big issue. Lighter is better, but I don't care much about sensitivity.

Currently, I'm using a 7'6" moderate fast/H flipping stick for this application, and I'd like something lighter in weight and power, shorter, and faster.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I fish the 127 Slender Pointer which is about 3/4oz pretty often. I use a 6' 10" MH/F and it seems to do very well for me.

If you are going to exclusively fish 5/8 jbs and 1 oz jbs, I'd go for 2 rods, I'm not saying it can't be done, but a rod is going to be a pretty big compromise one way or the other.

7’ StCroix avid MHM. Great jerk bait rod with braid. Handles 3/8-1oz baits.

Look into either the Megabass Destroyer Daemos, or the Orochi XX Diablo Spec R. I use the Spec R for big jerkbaits (Pointer 128, Balisong 130, Kanata) and I love it. The Daemos is supposed to be a higher end Spec R, and ever since i bought a few of the USA Destroyers, I've had to talk myself out of getting one.

I use this rod for my normal jerkbait fishing. It is a 6'4" delay series rod for lighter baits If you look at the video he explains what he designed it to do, it has a 60% backbone-40% tip ratio and a shorter handle.

The next rod in his "Delay" series is a 6'6" 60-40 rod also. It specs for cranks and square bills but it handles baits from 3/8 to 1 ounce so I bet it would work well for your use.  I love the one I use and it is not ridiculous in price either.
