USING POWER TRIM ON OUTBOARD TO HOIST WIFE

Featured Replies

Hello,

Taking my family boating over the weekend.  I have a 50HP Evinrude with a power trim.  Can I use the power trim to "help" my wife get out of the water into the boat?  She weights approx 170lbs.  I was  hoping she could put her feet on the lower unit; and I could raise the trim to help her get out of the water.

thanks

Larry

yes  its actually a recommended technique if someone has fallen overboard

Why not get one of those hang-over-the-side ladders?  Not saying the engine wouldn't handle the job but if she's barefoot and her foot would slip off the cavitation plate, she could wind up with a nasty gash if her foot strikes the prop.

Should have bought a Triton. Ladder built into the hull. Just kidding. I have seen many professionals do this on T.V.

P.S. :  sometimes I amaze myself when I read what I wrote.  If anyone noticed I typed Latter instead of Ladder.

Being that the hydraulics can hold under hole shot conditions her 170 shouldn't be a problem, but is she nimble enough to stay on it as the capitation plate tilts upward.  And where will she step to after that.  If she slips there are many different injuries that may happen.  A ladder would be much safer.

I recommend the 4 rung version.

I put a peice of non slip material (kind of like sandpaper) on my cavitation plate just for that reason - in case someone falls overboard.  I've used it to hoist myself back on and i'm 235 lbs.

That is how we used to get in My boat when we would water ski or tube. I have hydros on the motor so it made it easy to step there

After seeing this thread title a few times I've got to laugh.

My wife would kill me if I posted a question on a public forum about hoisting her with a OB motor power trim along with mentioning her weight!   ;)   ;D

Beat me to it, I was kinda thinking the same thing ;)

Maybe she should stick to pools and not the middle of lakes...

Well, we made it back from the lake.

My wife stepped onto the lower unit of the motor and ripped the transom completely off the boat.

Just kidding.  She actually chickened out all together so it was a non issue.  My daughter had no problem climbing in the boat.

You guys must have quite an image of my wife in your minds.  I guess when one uses "hoist" and "wife" in the same sentence, it does create a certain image.

thanks

Larry
