Poison Tail mold modification

Featured Replies

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has modified their poison tail mold to find a 30 degree round bend hook. I personally don't care for the goofy hook the mold calls for. I've tried to fit a round bend hook in my poison tail mold and it wont seal correctly. Just wondering if anyone has modified their mold to fit a 30 degree round bend and if so, how you did it.

What size? I didn't have to modify my mold to take a Mustad 32886 or the EC 3886. The hook that mold calls for, the 91768, is a 28 degree bend and the tolerance isn't tight so most 30 degree hooks work just fine. The 1/8oz is the problem as you need a smaller hook than the standard 3/0 but the Owner twist lock light 1/0 fits that nicely, just take the screw lock off and you are good to go.

I have the small poison tail mold (1/8, 1/4, 3/8). I don't like the 91768 hook. When I try and use the 30 degree round bend, I can't close the mold completely. If I force it closed and pour, the head of the jig comes out crooked and caddy wompus and basically makes a junk jig. I've tried the 32886 and haven't had any luck. Maybe I should try the Owner hook.

Which size are you trying to pour with what size hook?

I primarily pour 1/4 and 3/8. The 32886 does not fit. I can not close the mold using the 32886 with out forcing it closed. That's when the heads come out crooked.

I can take the 3/0 EC 3886 and use it in both the 1/4oz and the 3/8oz perfectly fine. The 1/4oz has a slight gap but I can hold it tight and just get a small amount of flashing, the 3/8oz fits perfectly.

Just file the mould a bit to make the hooks fit. Really doesn't take long to do. If you go back to using a thinner hook you might have an extra bit of flashing, but really not much.

Have you tried the Mustad 32724 hook? It is a lighter wire hook that works in my mold.

I have not tried the EC 3886. Also have not tried the Mustad 32724. I will give those hooks a try before I do anything to the mold itself. I just don't like the 91768 one bit.

The EC 3886 will work if you use the 3/0 and I try to make that specific. The 4/0 isn't going to work in the 1/4oz cavity.

So the EC 3886 3/0 will fit the 1/4 cavity and the 4/0 will fit the 3/8 spot... Do you pour 1/8 heads? What hook do you use for that one? I don't normally use 1/8 ounce swim jigs, but I'm just curious.

If you want a round bend hook for the 1/8oz you need to get the Owner Twist-Lock Light hooks in a 1/0, I'll leave a link. It isn't an EWG but it does have a wider gap and it is a killer hook. If I use a 1/8oz swim jig I use the casting jig mold, I can use both the 3/0 and 4/0 Mustad 32886, or EC 3886 which I prefer that head style for a true swim jig, the larger poison tails I use as hybrid swim/casting jigs and the 1/8oz poison tail I like for hair jigs and finesse jig. I'm not sure if the 4/0 will fit the 3/8oz cavity, I know the 3/0 will but the 4/0 may be a bit too big.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it! I need to get some more hooks ordered!

I was able to bend out some ec lil nasty hooks to fit in the mold. They turned out well. I did have to use plumbers putty to fill in around the hook eye and plastic holder in order to prevent flashing. I believe the one in the picture is a 2/0 or 3/0. Dont remember which. I did do a number 1 as well though

Unfortunately those wont fit in the 1/8 oz mold. Were just very limited on that size. I really dont have an issue with the mustad wide gap hook personally, but i did want to try a lighter wire hook for some hair jigs which is why i modified the ec lil nasty. Those owner hooks smalljaw suggested are aweful pricy if you wanted to do alot of them.

Yeah I looked up the Owner hooks. They are about $1 a piece. I don’t make many 1/8 ounce swim jigs. What did you do to modify that hook? Bend it with pliers?

Heated it right below the bend and made a secondary bend below the original bend with channel locks. I dont have pictures unfortunately. Its my understanding that not all hooks are able to be bent like this.

This is a 1/0 28/30 degree Mustad 91762BLN hook that I use for finesse applications.

Allen, where did you find that hook? All I can find is the 91768BLN in a 1/0 which the OP doesn't like, he wants round bend hooks.

This is a discounted Mustad hook and I got them on eBay.  They run about 1/2 size bigger than other light wire Mustad hooks.

Let me know if you need any as I have about 300 of them.

I might be the only one that likes the poison tail hook. Yea, it looks a little goofy, but it has amazing holding power once you stick a fish.

I should mention that this was not my own idea. I saw it in a forum on crappie.com

Does that lil nasty actually hold up as a swim jig hook? I've tried that hook in the round ball heads I make for my small swim baits and I've had problems with the hook flexing and losing fish.

Ordered some 30 degree Gami round bends. Should be here today. Looking forward to see how they fit in my mold. Ready to make some swim jigs again!

I appreciate the offer Allen but I'm good, I use the Twist Lock Light Owners as well as the small 91768 as I like the EWG hook but I want to say thanks, it was generous.
