Ok so I love to fish but I’d rather not pull out all my line to fish a type of lure and just waste line to switch back to something else.I use 17 pound Berkeley vanish flourocarbon and I’ve heard it makes top water lures sink which I’ve found is not true at all the only lures it’s made sink for me is a rebel crock hopper and tiny torpedo it doesn’t really impair the action that much I’ve figured out that it doesn’t affect my topwater frogs or whopper plopper at all it doesn’t mess with my buzz baits either so what I’m asking is have you guys had any problems with fluorocarbon and topwater lures?-Slade

I will always say to each ones own. But on long casts when slack is used in your line for action I would strongly suggest braid for the simple fact it does not stretch. And to also help on the not buying other rods or pulling line off to switch. I would  use braid as the main line. Then when using other lures like crankbaits or other moving baits that need stretch tie on your flurocarbon leader. Just some thoughts 

Braid to Fluoro leader for primary fishing then take off the leader? Different spool with different line? Different setup? Just options

I am a mono fan for top waters, but I am fortunate to have a Rick Clunn top water rod to keep it on. Years ago when he was affiliated with BPS he developed this rod for top waters.  It is a 6'6"MH with a really soft tip for this purpose and of course BPS and he went separate ways and dropped his rods.  One day at that time I went into BPS and they had his rods on clearance for $80.  I got the last one on the rack, not sure what it would be like, but he knew what he was doing and it has been an incredible top water rod. I just like the feel of the rod with 14lb BPS Excel mono on a Curado 200E7.  I do not do frogs on it.

I have a problem with Vanish and any kind of lure. Horrible knot strength on Vanish IMO, especially on 12lb and less.

 

Flouro would not be my first choice for topwater lures but it wouldn't be my last either. You should be fine with any kind of Flourocarbon other than Vanish

Definitely affects action on anything slow or paused - poppers, Spooks, Devil's Horse, etc. If you constantly reel baits in like buzzers or Ploppers, or have something underneath to support the bait (weeds, vegetation), you can get by with fluoro with few problems. Do whatever you want though...

The OP may not experience a topwater sinking from fluorocarbon but if the front of a slow or pausing lure dips the slightest bit, the action is affected.  I've test walking the dog with a number of lures on fluorocarbon and it affects the action in noticeable fashion.  To me, any effect on the action at all is something I don't want.

You ever heard of fly line dressing? Simply put on about 3' of fly line dressing near the lure to help float the FC line. Casting tiny 1/8 oz lures with stiff 17 lb FC must be tricky

12-15 lb Big Game would be a better all around line choice IMO.

What knot do you use I use the palomar knot and I’ve heard if you use any other knot on flouro it will break have you ever lost any fish on it?

I use the Palomar knot and moisten the line before cinching it. I have lost fish when using Vanish 8lb test line. I have gone as high as 12lb line and it was better. I found the line would break sometimes on anything lower than 12lb Vanish when tying a knot.
