Flipping and pitching from the bank?

Featured Replies

Does anyone else fish flipping jigs from the bank? If so, does it seem effective? I've always just flipped them around weeds around the bank and gotten a couple bites. Would something else be a better choice for shore fishing? I've heard that KVD grew up fishing jigs from the bank. ;)

I do it when I don't feel like taking out the jon boat.  Works for me in ponds which is mainly where I fish.   You can't get to as good of spots on the shore compared to the jon boat but it still is really fun.

I started throwing jigs from the bank last year. I would throw them into laydowns and area other anglers always passed up due to cover. Worked well for me, plan on doing it more soon.

Casting, or pitching?

I know you weren’t asking me but I do do both

Love pitching from the bank, you can get some really unique angles that some in a boat cannot achieve. Landed some nice bass this last weekend pitching a rage craw to shallow wood from the bank

Thanks, what do you usually target? There are a few weed beds along the shore, and that's all. (for cover)

Pitching about 20ft but with a deadly quiet entry into the water. Worked well for me.

If all you have is vegetation, fish the edges and any holes in the vegetation. Try to keep your retrieve as vertical as possible to eliminate bogging down in the weeds and getting broke off or having a fish shake off because you couldn't get him out of the weed bed.

I know I'll get a lot of push back or eye rolling, but fishing from shore is no different than fishing from a boat. If there is cover where pitching and flipping (including punching) in front of you, then it makes sense to do it. If there is open water or no clear targets, casting would make more sense. I pitch most often to pads, wood (and sadly tires, shopping carts and the like), flip to small openings, and punch around mats as conditions dictate.

I fish several lakes that allow fishing docks from shore. Move and pitch with stealth and you will be amazed at how many fish docks, pontoons, etc can hold. Maybe they get spooked by trolling motor IDK, but on a few lakes we often " walk the docks" before launching. What really makes me shake my head is when we fish a line of docks on the way to the take out then go back and fish them from shore after trailing the boat. It's like " where  did all these fish come from?".
