Hi Guys!! 

 

My name is Jen. I'm here on a road trip staying in Barnstable MA until 5/18 for some mandatory work training/conferences (I'm from PA). Basically my hours of training are from 7am-11am Mon-Fri and I'm free the rest of the time. I have my kayak along with some gear. I'm looking to do some smallmouth/largemouth fishing, preferrably smallmouth. I don't mind driving if it's worth it so anything within a 60-75 mile radius I'm fine with. I do prefer fishing smaller bodies of water just because I can't cover all that much ground quickly in my kayak. I did try both Mashpee/Wakeby and Spectacle yesterday which were decent. Mashpee/Wakeby was more ground than I could cover in a few hours.

 

I know coming from someone who fishes Lake Erie from my dads boat that there aren't many spots that will match that but any help/insight is much appreciated no matter how remote the spot may be      Also, if I had to choose quantity or quality, I would lean towards quality. Welcome to the forum.  I fish mostly south shore MA down to Plymouth but get to Harwich a few times a year.  I'll be there 5/8 to 5/10.  Water temps should be in the high 50s to low 60s.   

 

I'm planning on fishing Sheep's Pond in Brewster tomorrow. Hinckley's and Seymour , both in Harwich, Wednesday, and who knows on Thursday.  They're all off route 6, exit 10.  Hinckley's s fairly flat with a max depth of about 20'.  You'll find LMB, SMB, and yellow perch there.  Seymour is deeper, has one flat and  a nice hump NW of the public beach.  Sheeps has a big flat with steep drop off's on either side about half way down from the launch.  I've not had much luck there, but other members have. There are reports of BIG SMB.   Maybe they'll chime in.

 

If you have a fish finder, you're all set.  If not, Google Earth shows pretty good images.  Try this link to Navionics' website too:

at Sheeps I fished and had luck on the northern end. at night with the plopper and during the day dragging a jig. 

Thanks for the info YoTone.  I should be there atound lunch tomorrow and plan on staying until dark.

Jen,  you might stay away from Hinckley’s and Seymour while you’re here.  I fished both today and couldn’t buy a hit.  The herring are running now and both waters are overrun with herring.  The bass have plenty to eat and don’t need our offerings.

 

I had some good luck at Buck’s pond.  I didn’t launch until about 7:00 this evening, but got two LMB and one SMB, all between 2 1/2 and 3 pounds on a bluegill flavored jig.  There’s a public beach area off Buck’s Pond Road.  It’s posted as needing a town sticker but I called Harwich PD and they said no problem before Memorial Day.

look for beds. The smallmouth are on beds. Largemouth are starting to stage to them too. Some lakes the fish spawn earlier than others down here! 7-15 feet of water for the big girls. You'll find them up in the shallows too. Look for the nests(whitish circles). Dead give away thatvthey are nests. 1/4oz jigs with craw trailer. Or a sweat beaver type bait on a Texas rig or ballhead. If they are locked on beds. They'll smack just about any color. If not use the usual colors blk and blue, watermelon, green pumpkin or a reddish orange!
