Need recommendations on a new finesse setup

Featured Replies

Hey there I'm making my first post and want suggestions on a finesse setup.  I'm a shore fisherman that uses a 2 rods but one of my reels has died so time to blow some $$$.  I've been bringing 2 casting rods for a while which has served me well but thinking a med lt 7' spinning rod would be better for light weight applications.  Any thoughts on th this setup?

Rod:  St. Croix Mojo Bass Spinning Rod 7'1" med 2 piece

Reel:  Daiwa Fuego 2500 spinning reel

Main line:  832 Advanced Braided Superline 10lb

Leader: 8lb P-Line Soft Flurocarbon

I'd like to hear what your favorite setup is as well.

I’m running a Fenwick HMG medium, with a pflueger president le. I cast a Ned rig easily. I’d give it a shot with the medium first if you already have the st. Croix.

Hi Frosty, I don't have the setup.  This is what i'm looking at.  I was looking at the Fenwick HMG too.  Pflueger President is a great reel.  Only looking at the Daiwa since they are on sale.

My trout set up is a St Croix Premiere 6'6" med lt with a Pflueger President that I've had for 12 years and LOVE the setup.  I would use this setup for finesse but the rod doesn't seem to toss lures well that are much over 1/4oz but probably should give it a try.  May even put the braid on the 2nd spool since I use 6lb floro for trout

I'm using a Fenwick Silverhawk II 7' ML/F with a Penn Battle II 2000 with 5lb fluoro for 1/16oz hook and Z-Man TRD's for my Ned rod, and I can fling it a good distance, I'd guess at least 50 yards. The rod is rated for 1/8-1/2oz, but handles the TRD and hook just fine. I'm pretty impressed with the Fenwick though, I could feel taps while deadsticking the TRD out 50 yards on slack line.

But if I had to do it over again, I'd get the 7' ML/F Cabela's XML spinning rod for $91 shipped, they are on sale. I just got the 6' L/F and absolutely love the build quality and sensitivity, check out their other offerings. Lifetime Cabela's warranty to boot.

Use your trout outfit with the 6 lb FC with lures under 1/4 oz.

Ned rig, 1/8 oz darter head with a finesse worm, drop shot, split shot, nail weight worm should all work good.

I picked up a St Croix Avid X 6'9" ML/XF and a Daiwa BG 2000. The Mojo has the same blank as the avid but I would recommend a BG over the Fuego.

Thanks Tom.  I normally use 6lb floro for trout so I'll give it a try

Boomstick, sounds like a good plan.  I will have to check out the BG
