Long story short, I was cleaning a used Daiwa Tatula 100 HSL (my first time) and after reassembling and cleaning it about 17 times, I think I may have damaged one or both of the gears. 

 

I just received a new Daiwa Fuego and the manual shows not to turn the handle or engage the clutch without a spool inside the frame as it will damage gears. Pretty sure this is where I went wrong, as I did exactly what it said not to do

 

The Tatula still works but it's a bit "grindy". Would I need to replace both the main gear and pinion gear or just the pinion gear? Does anyone know a good place to order these parts? Thanks for your time. 

 

FWIW the Fuego is a really nice smooth reel. Can't wait to get it out on the water. 

Look at the teeth on the gears, do they look like they are scratched or chipped?

The pinion gear looks like it's scratched a few places. Don't see much on the main gear. 

 

Try using some drag grease on them...

Tackle Trap is the place for parts. I can’t for the life of me figure out how you can damage gears though by engaging the reel without a spool.

I notice that you are in Canada. I would recommend not shipping internationally. It would be much better to find someone in Canada so you don't have to deal with customs or paying extra for shipping. There is a place in Mississauga, ON named A Aikman Sporting Goods that could do the repair.

The tatula has a large bearing supported pinion gear. There’s also a small bearing under handle side plate where the ccc is, but it makes very little to no contact with the end of the spool shaft. I’ve never encountered this with any of the ones I’ve owned or serviced. Who knows, maybe I just got lucky though.

I'm not sure which Daiwa that does what @BaitFinessedescribes, at that time I got 3 Daiwa, Luna, tatula Ct and alpha SV. I think most likely would be tatula CT, scared the heck out of me but I only did it once.

I've tried to deal with that guy multiple times. It takes multiple calls and weeks upon weeks of waiting for an answer from him before you know if he can help you out.

What you're seeing is more likely the result of cleaning the excessive grease from the reel than any inadvertent damage. If you decide to go with new gears replace the set. You can get parts directly from Daiwa.

That is unfortunate. I recommend talking to Daiwa and see what they can do for you. Good luck!
