I just took apart the side plate on several reels and cleaned and lightly oiled everything on that side including the spool and shaft.  I did not touch anything on the handle (business end) and now i have a few reels that do not have any drag.  It just slips all the way out.

 

Only thing I can think of is that I did put 1 drop of oil on the pinion gear and it could have gotten the drag plates lubed up.  IF that is the case can you give me the best process to get it off.  OR if there is anything else I need to look into please let me know.

I believe your assumption is correct. The reel need to be taken down from the crank side, drag degreased them properly lubricated if necessary. In the future the spool and shaft do require oil, just kept clean. Gears are greased. I'm getting caught up on spring rush if want to send it in. 

I had similar issues that @Delaware Valley Tackle just fixed for me.  I used this as a guide for some 'superficial' maintenance:

I think I ran into problems in the lower left step on first page: "Clean and oil VBS® Brake Case and spool bearing."   I am fairly certain that I also put a drop of oil either on the shaft or into the 'shaft hole' and created problems for my reel(s).

Thanks for the info. I am just so weirded out that this is even happening.  I just Q-tipped the spool and shaft with oil... Hope that doesn't add resistance.  Everything seemed smooth.

They do not carry it at a local DNR shop (they also told me to never grease my drag and greasing it would ruin it, to just wipe it with a cloth- I just let this go but may have to try it and see if it fixes it if I cannot find this grease to fix this issue)

What reel is it? Many drags can be safely run dry.

You get the Shimano stuff from Shimano.  Smooth Drags carries Cal's, and anything else you need to service your reels.

There is 1 old shimano

1 older bps

 

I do not have models with me.  How do you know if it can be or not?

If the old bps has the nylon washers they should be dry. The old Shimano may have the cloth drag which should be greased but you can get away with running it dry for bass fishing in the meantime. Carbon drags can be run either way but I prefer dry.

So general rule of thumb is nylon = dry, cloth drag= lightly greased to dry, carbon= dry?

For the most part yes. The mushy dartanium stuff Shimano uses and felt need grease. The composit drag in some quantums is a dry system. I'm probably missing something. 

drag grease works very well on gears as well as drag discs
