Hey guys, I'm currently using a No. 8 fishing tackle MH Fast 7' rod for chatterbaits but they seem to spit the hook often and I'm wondering if it is because of the fast action.  Would you guys suggest a mod fast action rod instead?  If so what one around $100-$150 would you recommend?

I use a BPS 7' Medium fast Carbonlite for my chatterbaits and they really hook themselves on that rod.  Besides, the rod is super light.  I also use 17lb XL mono.

I had that rod and I don’t have a good opinion about it ,from my personal experience using it. I would recommend a 7 mojo bass medium heavy mod fast. 

I throw my chatterbaits on a Phenix XG glass rod with a full fluoro spool and haven't had any noticeable problem with fish throwing the hook.  What kind of line are you using with your chatterbaits?

I’ve have a dobyns Sierra 734c and a daiwa zillion 7’2 medium-heavy regular action

I am using 15lb Seaguar InvisX

As with a spinner bait, if you're getting short strikes change retrieve, profile or color. If they're coming unhooked check hook sharpness or hook set technique.

What are you trying to do, Mike?  Defeat the Bait Monkey? 

I fish them on a Hammer Rods 6' 9" H/F Micro rod. Doesn't sound like it would be a good rod for them, but it has an excellent tip, good bend throughout, and lots of backbone to move big fish. Take a look and you can see the tip vibrating nicely, the tip jump when the fish strikes, and how well it loads on the hook set.

 

I also use a Mojo Bass MH/Fast with no issues.

I also have a Dobyns Sierra 734c  and I like it a lot for this.

Dobyns champion xp 736cb Glass hands down my favorite rod for chatterbaits. It’s a bit outside your price range, but if you check the dobyns website, you may be able to snag a factory mislabeled rod for $170 including shipping. 

Could we get some specifics on the dislike of 7' medium Carbonlite rods ? I have been using four of the 7' mediums for three years now on the Tidal Potomac and wonder if I am missing something.

I like the Abu Garcia Veritas 6 Foot 6 Inch Medium Heavy Moderate Fast with 6.6 Gear Ratio spooled with 14 to 17lb Monofilament. The shorter Rod offers precision in close quarters, and this is where I'm casting ChatterBaits 90% of the time. I'd recommend a longer Rod in the same action to cover greater amounts of water and if you are using the ChatterBait as a search bait. 

I use an MBR843 for 3/8oz Chatterbaits with a trailer. I've also had good luck with the Avid 7' MH/F for slightly heavier Chatters/Spinners. Both rods with 12# YZ Hybrid.

This. The chatterbaits have a pretty large hook. Don't be afraid to give it a little extra tug on the retrieve to make sure the hook is buried. This can be especially important if the hook is getting a little rugged. I have alot of grass so I prefer fishing them with a fast tip, don't have any issues with fish coming unpegged. Just gotta make sure the hook is good to go and then drive it home. 

If you have a M/F rod, use that for 3/8oz and smaller chatterbaits (consider moving up to a MH for a heavy trailer).

 

Alternatively, if you are using braid, try fluorocarbon or mono for more stretch, and if you are using fluorocarbon, try mono which has more stretch typically.
