I would like to learn all I can about the technique I already know trailers blades sizes etc but don’t really know how to fish it in med/deep in the water  column is there any articles that really break it down in detail?

Down in the water column I throw them out, count down, give them a pop, and start a retrieve (sometimes steady and sometimes herky jerky).  A try various count downs until I find the depth that I want to fish.  10 second count down has been the best producer for me lately.

Two sources I'd check with information available on various videos: Rick Clunn and Jimmy Houston.

 

Rick Clunn says he learned how to perfect fishing with spinnerbaits from a couple of anglers he considers the best of all time. One of them, he mentioned, used spinnerbaits year-round, all conditions. He was that good with them. Clunn gives very specific advice, details. 

 

And, I can't count the shows or videos where I have seen Jimmy Houston pull out a spinnerbait at some point or another. I think in his case, he'll crank one out at certain times and conditions as if it is part of a repertoire . . . Houston seems to always find bass with them. And, it seems he never moved away from spinnerbaits as so many others did chasing newer things.

 

These would be two guys you should "memorize."

There is plenty of good information on these boards if you pry it loose with persistent questioning.

 

 

IMO, one of the easiest lures to fish.  Cast it out, and reel it in.  The thump of the blades as you retrieve gives you confidence that it's doing it's thing; when you don't feel the thump anymore you've hung up on weeds or a bass has overtaken it and pushed it towards you, which often happens.

 

When I fish them, I first try near the top of the water column before trying it deeper.  For me, a moderate, steady retrieve fits the bill in most situations.  I use a lot of 3 or 3.5" paddle tail plastics for trailers.

 

Sounds weird, but I catch a lot of bass trolling spinnerbaits over weed tops in the summer.

I YouTube Rick Clunn spinnerbait and pretty much one 8 min video came up when he was fishing a tournament. Can’t seem to find more than that for spinnerbaits

I like to use a single willow leaf blade .Just let it sink to the bottom, Hop it like a worm or more often reel in a few feet then let it sink again  .   If you cant find a single willow leaf you could switch out blades on a Srike King Midnight Special. Then you will   have the added attraction of a rattle .

I have caught, over a lifetime of fishing, one fish on a spinner bait. It was a pickerel on a booyah 1/4oz pond mini spinner. Just one fish. Perhaps it's time I buy a couple in a couple different colors and configurations and spend a day confidence bait fishing them until I fill the boat. 

 

They're just something that has never produced for me, but that's not to say I have given them a fair shake.
