Squarebills and the Wife

Featured Replies

My wife can't use a baitcaster. Would she be OK throwing KVD 1.0's and 1.5's on spinning gear using 8lb mono? I do this sometimes when I'm walking the banks and all I want to carry is a two piece and a backpack, but I'm careful about it as far as wood, vegetation, and other cover. She's far less experienced.

It's my wallet and sanity at stake. ?

Yes, she will be fine.  Lot”s of people do it.

There isn’t much a spinning reel can’t do that a casting reel can. Get her a 2500 sized and step up to 10# test.

The 10# test is just added insurance and 2500 reels easily handle it. Trilene xl or other relatively thinner mono will do (in other refrain from thicker mono like XT)

I fish cranks with spinning reels without hesitation.

The other advantage she’ll be able to cast into the wind without fear. May she outfish  you every time. ?

My 9 year old daughter throws square bills all day on a spinning rod. She likes the  rick clun series 3

I throw 1.0's on spinning gear from my boat instead of casting gear. The 1.5 will be a little more of a chore because of the resistance but it can be done.

If you buy her one of those fancy dc reels then she could use a baitcaster with no backlashes?

Hm, wallets and sanity... two things women love to deplete!

....

I'm just kidding ladies! Don't stone me! ?

I used a M/F spinning rod for a while for squarebills with 10lb and 12lb mono. No issues there.

If there is one thing I hate doing, it's cranks on a spinning rod. I'm teaching my kiddos baitcaster to prevent them having to deal with it. It can be done, I just find it frustrating beyond belief.

What issues are you having? I’m really curious. I’d like to know to see if it can be resolved.

One of the pluses of using a spinning rig to me for cranks and jerks imho, is because the reel rests below the rod, it just seems a more comfortable, easy feeling when ripping and jerking the lure. It just fine with a casting reel, but there is something that I can quite describe. Perhaps it’s the lopsided balance casting inherently possess, being that they’re handle side heavy so to speak.

Jerks I am comfortable using the spinner. I hate the drag the cranks put on the reel. I'm more comfy on casting gear.
