Fluorocarbon to a Mono leader?

Featured Replies

Hey guys i wanted to do some top water, unfortunately everything i read says you cant use fluorocarbon? Because it sinks im guessing.

But my question is what if i wanted to tie a mono leader on to it then fish it? would it still sink or would i be able to fish my topwater, buzzbaits without always switching my line out.?

The reason you shouldn't use fluoro for topwater is that if you have any type of pause in your cadence or retrieve the fluoro will sink and you will lose direct contact with your bait, making any kind of imparted action difficult. A mono leader will not help you here unfortunately. It's generally best to go straight mono or straight braid for topwater IMO.

You don't want 2 knots to fail, leader knot and lure knot.

Use fly line dressing to float the FC about 3' to 5' in front of the lure.

I guess in theory you could tie a heavier mono leader to fluro and make it work, but then the question becomes why?

He probably has only one rod and reel.  That's why he's contacting Daiwa for a spare spool.
