Need help choosing rods!!!

Featured Replies

Hello bassresourcers!

I'm looking to upgrade two rods I currrently own for both frogging and flipping. Both of these rods double as swimbait rods. One will be paired up with a daiwa zillion shla and the other with a shimano antares HG (12 model). I would like a frog rod that could double as a smaller swimbait rod (hudd 68 as ex.) and a flipping rod that could be also used for sligthly larger swimbaits (hudd 8 as ex). Current models that interest me are the st croix legend xtreme 7'11" heavy for flipping and the 7'4" for frogging or equivalent models in either the shimano expride or dobyns champion series.

Thanks for your input! Any other suggestions also considered!

Nathan

Seems like 7'11" is awfully long for flippin, imho.

Pitching maybe, flipping seems about right.

Not sure why 7'11" seems long. Too each his own I guess. Flipping rods are usually 7'6" to 8'. Sounds like your right in the right wheel house. As far as frog rod that can double as a swimbait rod. I like the Irod Fred's Magic Stick in the Fiber, Genesis 2, and Air line ups.

I think your choices would serve you well.

Thanks! Do they pair up well with slitghly heavy reels?

I would recommend the Dobyns 736 Champion XP F/H for your frog rod due to its versatility. IMO, the St Croix 7'4 H will not be able to handle the Huddleston 68s near as well as the 736 will be able to.

For your flipping rod, there are a ton of good options from Dobyns, Megabass, St Croix, etc.

What budget for both rods are you considering?

I personally like 7oz to 8oz reels on my heavy duty rods. Some others will probably say doesn't matter.

I have the 7'11 Xtreme.  I use it mainly for flipping but it doubles as my A-rig rod.  It feels fine for that so I imagine you wouldn't have any issues with smaller hudds.  I'd be nervous throwing a big swimbait like an 8in hudd though. I'm with @Finnz922.  I like reels in the 7 to 8oz range on this rod.

Thanks for the answer! I was also lookin at the 736! Sure sounds like a great stick,  I would like to stay in the xtreme range of prices thanks :) but here in canada we cant get any smaller brands so most of it will either be shimano/loomis, st croix, dobyns, maybe ducketts, okuma fenwick etc...

Thanks for the answer! Good to know for the bigger swimbaits, might keep that one for those two techniques also then :)

Megabass Hyuga 72H is great with frogs and swimbaits up to 3oz.  You can get them for $225 from The Tackle Trap with a US warranty.

Being from north of the border megabass are wicked hard to get and warranties even more... thanks to!

I have family that lives in Truro and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It's amazing up there. Especially during the summer when its 25 degrees Celsius with a nice breeze.

Finding a versatile frog rog isn't near as hard as finding a flipping rod with the versatility to double as a swimbait rod for swimbait such as the Hudd 8 which is close to 4-5 oz depending on which ROF. I am all for versatility but I can't think of a rod of the top of my head. Most flipping rods are typically rated to around 2 oz on average. So, I would recommend two separate rods. There are lot of great flipping and swimbait rods from Shimano/G Loomis, Dobyns, St Croix, Daiwa that you could choose from. Is there a local tackle shop near you that carries any rods?

Well then I guess I'll have to buy a third rod down the rod (sarcastic oh no!) ?. I dont do a whole lot of big swimbaits so I might still use it from time to time. Usually throw a lot more the ROF5 6 inch. And trust me, here in southern quebec, we dont get that 25 with a breeze, more like 42 and thunderstorms haha!

Haha. ?

I remember I went up there 3-4 years ago and everyone was complaining about the heat wave and it was 30-32 and were buying air conditioners.

Goodluck on the rod search. Let me know if you need any help. I am sure others will chime in and provide there recommendations.
