Recommended Braid and Mono lb. test?

Featured Replies

I will be spooling up several 3000 size spinning reels here soon.

I wanted to use mono on one and braid on the others to get a feel for what I like using best.

These will be for general Bass Fishing, not technique specific.

What lb. test would you recommend for each braid and mono?

Thanks

#20 braid (Smackdown), #6 Tatsu.

I don't use braid on my spinning reels, but have had 8lb BPS mono in green on my three spinning reels for the last 15 years.  Works great on the tidal Potomac, which can challenge fishing gear.

20lb braid but don't fill the whole reel with it. Just do like 100 yards of it. For mono, I'd use 12lb trilene big game.

Sdsc357, why do you suggest to not fill the braid all the way up?

I fill the spool about half way with thin mono, usually 8lb trilene xl. Then fill the last portion with the braid.

Braid is expensive. no need to fill a whole spool. I use thinner mono as a backer, because the braid will lay better than if you use a heavier mono.

Thanks Russ E!

^What Russ said. Fill your spool with mono, then add your braid. This way if you ever have cut your braid off, you just cut the 100 yards and add new line versus cutting the line and keep fishing with the spool only half filled.

Nice, that will certainly help out. Braid adds up real fast. I appreciate that tip man. ?

I've been experimenting with braid brand and diameter on my spinning reels this season. I had some 30# sufix 832 I threw on a 2500 sized shimano and it's one of my favorites. I use straight braid for topwater and add an 8# yozuri hybrid leader when I'm fishing sub-surface. Its paired with a 7' M/F rod. It just works... the heavier diameter braid is super overkill but line management is a breeze.

My other favorite pairing I've used was 15lb X8 on a 2000 sized reel with 6lb leader on a ML/F rod.

When I ran them with YZH and mono both I used 8lb and 6lb respectively. If you were going to be using the 3000 sized reel for Texas rigs and dragging bottom and/or brush piles I'd not hesitate to go to 10lb.

Looks like I’ll be going with:

10lb. BBG for the mono, and 20lb. 832 for the braid.

I was going to try the New Super Slick Version 2, But I’ll wait till next season to do that.
