Rod length for Soft plastic craw lure

Featured Replies

I have two rods, medium heavy fast action 6'6 abu garcia and a 7'0 medium heavy fast Lews mach speed. I want to throw a soft plastic craw but don't know which length. I will be doing short casts near rocks. What should I do?

That makes sense and didn't think about that. Sweet.

Dude, literally either would work great.  Try them and see which you prefer for whatever reason.

Will do

Either would do, but personally I like 6'6 rods better, give me a better feel and I feel like I'm more in control. But thats because I fish a lot of creeks/ponds, if I go to a lake then I'm using 7'0 and above usually.

You can fish plastic craws with a rod anywhere from 5' to 10'.  Near docks and laydown cover, and making short pitch casts, I like a 6'8" mh/f rod.  This a nice length that isn't too short, but still have control of a big fish in cover on a short leash.  If I'm targeting weed pockets and edges, and making longer casts, 7' to 7' 6" is better for me.  If I'm punching, then 8' and I step up to heavy or XH power, and a bit slower, moderate to mod-fast action.

I think a lot of this comes down to with of the bait and flex of the rod.

I am more accurate with a 7' MBR than 6'10" JWR for non weighted TRIG, and the reverse for 1/2 ounce jig......

I use a 68 MHF Avid for my Jig/Texas Rig rod, works perfect especially in close quarters from the yak.

Ya, it doesn't do any good to have the right length rod in the wrong power.
