Interested in First (maybe a second) Custom Rod

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am interested in a potential Casting MH Mod Cranking rod and Spinning M to ML Fast (drop shot/Ned/weightless texas rig) rod.

I have no idea where this starts but just wanted to compare other custom rods to that of an "off the shelf rod".  I currently have 1 custom rod and love the quality for a similar price.

If you are willing and want to maybe pick up a job PM me and maybe we can work something out.

Would love pictures!

Thanks

Cost is almost always more.  The builder has a time investment, and even with price breaks still pay more when using the exact same components.  My cheapest custom so far was 300, and its everything I want.  I only mention this as going custom is not a money saving route but a way to get a rod that is not available off the shelf.  There are several custom builders on the site and DVT is a site sponsor.  Step one is to know exactly what you want.  Have you fished a blank you know is a perfect fit or something close?  Which reel seat is your favorite.  Are you looking for a working guide train of the builders desire or sic on a kr setup.  Do you you have length storage and transportation limits?

I understand that-  I am not looking for anything crazy specific as I am not "absolute" in my rods.  I have too many rods as is and want to start to cut out my lesser quality gear and fall in love with better quality.  I bought 2 "more expensive" set ups and find myself using those rods for a variety of applications (I'd rather cut off and retie then use one of my lesser rods because I literally FEEL the difference in some applications).  My "custom rod" that I own is just off the shelf from a rod builder.

No idea on favorite blank.

I know I want split grips

Length 6'6'' -7'4 but can be anything in between

No idea on guides- do not want micro

Is there a way to get info on this stuff from never doing this before?

Call Mike ar DVT (third logo from the bottom on the right edge of the page)

He will walk you through the whole process.

St. Croix XLC70MHF, will get the job done with no guesswork on anyone's part. Best of everything at a decent price with a super warranty. Same for your spinning rod. Get a custom when you have a specific need that's not met and you have a good idea of what's wrong.

I agree my st croix legend elite 70mhf always gets a spot in my yak and is one heck of a rod.  One of my best purchases in fishing and the rod and reel gorilla has a firm grip on me.

X2. Mike @Delaware Valley Tackle built a custom rod for me this past spring and I couldn't be happier.

Agree with the specific application.  I needed a rod for kayak fishing in small rivers for shooting under overhanging trees plus super sensitivity.  In the past 10 years I built 5 rods for that purpose and bought a couple more.  Last year I think I may have finally succeeded.
