WolfyBrandon
[10-15-2018] To start off, my uncle and I put in for late buck tags and were drawn this year. I was looking forward to hunting during the late season, however I wanted to hunt during the general season like everyone else to have my chance at a good one. Last year I did some scouting trips and seen a nice one I was going to look for once the season opened, but only after searching for multiple days I found out someone else had already harvested him during the early season. Well the way things played out this year... I don't know how it could have been any more perfect, maybe it was too perfect... So due to my work schedule I missed hunting on "Opening Day" as I work Saturday's. I only had enough time to sight-in my rifle before it got dark. Since both my uncle & I missed "Opening Day" (he is waiting for the late season), other hunters didn't see us at our usual spot were we sit each morning, so they got the impression we might not be hunting this year as we never miss opening day. On Sunday, I headed out solo to my usual spot, but about half way there I got sight of two hunters already near where I wanted to go. So I had to stop short ~600yds+ which was critical because it gave me a sight-line to a blind spot below where I usually sit (its over a hill). Within that blind spot were two bucks one of them good sized, but it was too far way to count points even with my scope on 9x. I literally just stood there and watched as the two other hunters headed up the hill to them, watched the bucks spook, and head around the hill into the timber. I actually did speak with them later on to get caught up on things. They said they seen the bucks and I watched as they moved up into a position where I was waiting to hear a shot, but it never came... Knowing that a good one was in that area, I returned there for an evening hunt. This is something I developed years ago, looking for a good place to sit and watch as the deer come out in the evening. I found one that was away from the timber so I wouldn't risk spooking them early before I had a chance to see them. It was down the hill a ways where they would already be committed to coming out by the time I see them. Well about 15 min before closing time I seen two bucks (possibly the same ones) coming down a deer trail so I moved into position. I could see the first one was nice possibly a 4 or 5 point, but couldn't confirm. I was going to let them get closer as they were moving toward me but I lost track of them when they moved behind a big bush and apparently turned and headed down hill instead of continuing on the trail. I know they didn't detect me as I had good wind and I was kneeled next to cover. On Monday morning I headed out and this time made it to my spot. Since I was hunting alone I would spend some time watching the area where I usually sit, then later move over to where my uncle would sit so I could keep an eye on both areas. Well the morning was getting late, and I was making my last move back to where I sit before I head down the hill, and along the way I looked down into the draw and seen a good deer moving up the hill. Looking through my scope I could see it was a good buck but way out of range. Since it was late he was booking it up the hill to reach the timber, and by the time I made it back to my spot he was already in. That was OK because... 1) I have maintained stealth, as he has not detected me yet. 2) I know his last location, and I'm betting that when he headed into the timber he is going to bed down for the day - then come out in the evening. 3) It's directly above where I sit in the evenings. Well that evening I made it up to my spot ~40min before closing time. Then ~20min before closing time, he showed... Less than 50 yards away, standing still, broadside. (Even had time for a picture) 1 Shot 5 x 6 Whitetail Had to give up hunting late buck season, but this is what I would be searching for anyway...
