Crankbait Rod for Shallow to Medium

Recommended Posts

I was looking to add a crankbait rod to my arsenal and have been eyeing the Lew's TP1 7'3" MH Mod crankbait rod. Looking to stay under a $100 and its $75 with the 25% off at DSG. Is this a good rod to throw various types of crankbaits from lipless to a ~10-15ft crankbait? Am open to to other options as well in the same price point.

Looking to get a three rod setup going and will add a new one every season. Got a Favorite White Bird 7' MH Fast for an all around rod with a Daiwa Megaforce and Shimano Curado K both ~7:1 gear ratio. Looking to get a spinning combo going also medium with fast action as well. I mainly throw texas rigs, spinners, lipless/medium diving crankbaits and chatterbaits. Trying to get back into fishing slowly. Is this rod a decent one to add to my growing collection?

I hear the Dobyn Fury 7’ MH Moderate Fast is a good one. With the DSG promo going on I can get that for $90 before tax. Would this be good for my three rod setup eventually to grow each season?

That TP 1 is a bit stout for my preference.  Would be good for heavier cranks though.

You will probably be happiest with a Dobyns.

It's an all graphite stick so yes. I use the Champion 705CB and 705CB Glass while three of my buddies picked up Furys and they fish very very similar to the Champs yet are super affordable.

What’s a good spinning rod for ~$100 that would be good towards my three rod setup? I think I read something medium fast would be best?

Take a look at a DSG special. It is called a Quantum Escalade. It runs about $50 ( always on sale for that but says it sells for $99.  Add a Pflueger President for a nice all around choice. I have the 6'6 model and they are way off on their lure weights. It will handle lures up to about 1/2 ounce easy. They also sell a 7 footer as well and that rates up to 3/4 ounce baits.  Another good option would be the Powell Inferno. They make a 6'10 spinning rod that would be a great option. It runs $99.00. Daiwa makes the Tatula XT and a 7' medium fast would work well also. It runs $99.

I have no experience with that particular rod, but from my experience I would wagerr that should be a pretty ideal cranking rod. For shallow water you will want something like M/F, M/MF or MH/MF, and Dobyns runs around a half power stronger than their rating, so a MH/MF should basically run on the stiffer side of medium.

The Kistler crank rip twitch is a great rod for what you need. I use it for all my treble hook baits. Also if you like a bit slower action in the tip the reel ‘n’ feel series are great crankbait Rods too.
