What kind of rod should I use for a top water and swim baits

Featured Replies

Looking to get a st croix bass x casting rod and wondering what one would be the best for top water and swim baits

One could argue that you shouldn't use the same rod for both topwaters and swimbaits.

The 6'6" MH should work fine though, that's what I used to throw literally everything until I got more technique-specific rods.

What kind of topwaters and swimbaits? Poppers, walking baits, ploppers, prop baits, buzz baits, toads, weightless swimbaits, jig hooked, texas rigged, weighted, pre rigged, treble hooked?

Whopper ploppers frogs buzz baits prop baits

The two rods I’m looking at are 7’1 mh fast action or 7’2 mh mod. Action

Depending on the weeds for the frogs, I don't think I'd use a MH/Mod.....I have that in the BassX and I wouldn't use that for any of the baits you've listed........it has A LOT of whip to it, not very firm.

I use a H/Fast for frogs, MH/Moderate for prop baits and Whopper 75's but not the BassX, I use an AvidX.  I do use the BassX for cranksbaits.

What bass x rod would be good for top water

How big are the swimbaits? If you're fishing swimbaits around 2 ounces and up you may want to use a heavy rod. Check the weight of your swimbaits and the rating on the rod you want to purchase.

I have only had the one I own in my hands.......for topwater it depends on what lure and where.

Frogs, Heavy, for the rest I'd probably go M/Fast.........

It depends on teh lure weight you are using and the cover you are going into.
