Painting Aluminum boats

Featured Replies

Many of you have referred to my rebuild thread for ideas for your boat.  In that thread, I explain all the materials used and you'll notice, that by using high end Interlux paint, I get a great finish but it costs about $225 to do a 12' boat.

well, we are doing Dirks boat over, it's about 1/2 done and we are looking at other (cheaper) paint options.  It looks like we will be going the Rust-oleum route this time, stay tuned for our paint review and rebuild tutorial.

Have you looked at the Rustoleum enamal that is made for appliances?  I may try that on my boat, should give a durable paint job.

We're using the clean metal primer with the professional enamel in dark blue

I used the professional enamel (satin black) on the inside of the boat.  I sanded the existing paint lightly with a medium grit sandpaper to remove the oxidation and then wiped it down with denatured alcohol.  Not sure if it will hold up or not.  On the outside I have some metal etching primer that I will be using but I'm waiting for a little warmer weather to use it. At $20 a spray can I want to make sure it is done right.

Any picture?

Did you remove all the paint?

We've been taking pics from the beginning.  This will be a tutorial.  Hull is bare already.

I have used that paint on some bowpresses that I have made.  It gives a good finish but I have noticed that in order to be really durable it needs to cure for at least a week before you put it to use.  It scratches very easy during that curing process.

Hi LBH,

Do you mean a clear metal primer?  Why not white?

Can't wait until you post detail on this mod.

I'm painting the inside of my new Jon Boat with Rustoleum topside marine paint. My factory paint is new and sound so I'm going to give it a good degreasing and cleaning with my powerwasher then paint. The factory paint is flat and there is plenty of friction on a finger pull so cleaning is all the prep I'm giving it.

In keeping with my Bass/Duck scheme, I'm using Beige paint with Hunter Green carpet. Photo's to come.
