makeshift anchor

Featured Replies

i have a small tracker boat  (15ft) with a 55lb thrust trolling motor on  the back of it that i use to fish on Lake hartwell with. i drift a lot when the wind is blowin, and i could use an anchor but i cant afford a really nice one.  any suggestions on a cheap anchor or how to make a makeshift one?

A lot of guys speak highly of those drift sock things. (I think that's what they're called.) I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but they slow you down pretty good.

A small 10 or 15 lb mushroom anchor with plenty of anchor line should hold you fine.

cinderblock or part of one.

Post a want to buy add in your local craigslist.

The best home made anchor I have ever seen was a small square peice of 1/2 inch steel with three small peices of rebar welded over one edge as cleats. I can't find a picture of one but it was great.

A 15 lb mushroom anchor is only about $20 at Wally World  ;)

alright thanks for the suggestions, ill look around for this mushroom anchor. do they usually sell them at BPS??

They sell them at Walmart and Academy if your from the South.

The best "found" anchor I have ever seen was back in 1974 on Lake Amistad. An old man pulled up near our camp and his anchor was three links of naval anchor chain; he said each piece weight 30 pounds.

I tried a half a concrete block but the first time I moved it across the floor of my aluminum boat the screech made my teeth hurt.

A trick some of the kayak fisherman use is to take a nylon net bag and fill it with rocks from the shore of the lake/pond they are fishing at and use that as an anchor. When they're done fishing, they just empty out the bag. May work for you, may not. Worth a try and you won't have excess weight to transport to and from the lake/pond.

+2. thats as cheap as it gets. I have a stack of block here you are welcome to, but it may not be worth the gas money for you to come get them. ;)

anything that weighs 10 or 20 lbs and you can tie a rope to will work.

The fellas up here use this for small aluminum boats up to 14 ft. They take a coffee can and line it with some kind of grease. Mix up some sackrette and pour it into the can. Just as it is getting tacky they imbed a large eye hook into the top. When it sets the bang the "anchor" out of the can(mold) Put on a 50' length of nylon anchor rope(4.99 at wally world) and instant cheapo anchor.

I have never done this myself, I asked when I saw the post.

I have a 13 ft Aluminum boat. I fill a Colorox bottle with sand, and rope it, works for me.

x2  I have about 20 of these all poured from a five gallon bucket (about 80lbs each).  We use them a lot on lake michigan to duck hunt.  2 of these will stop your boat from moving in 6 foot breakers, but if it gets rough they will ocasionaly scoot along the bottom.

I just realized you are from GA. I've got one you can have as well if you ever come up this way ;)  I'm serious, bro, it's yours if ya want it. I never use it. Got one of the anchor attachments on my boat that you can have as well. One of those that lock automatically on the rope. Not expensive new, but ya still can't beat used and free!

My granny used to have what I think was part of an old drive shaft as an anchor. Worked well too.

If you use a mushroom, I would make the rope run from the eye in the top of the anchor then through an eye on the bottom so that if it digs up under something you can still pull it out because it will make it twist and pull from the bottom rather than hooking by pulling straight up.

THANK YOU !!! next time im goin up to hartwell i might stop by. where you live?

I live near Clarkesville. I'll pm you my email address and phone number. If you put in at Poplar Springs or Tugalo you can swing by here and not lose a lot of time at all. If you usually come up 985 it will be real easy, if not it'll be a bit longer than going up 85 to Lavonia which is what I figure you do.

As far as that goes, just come up to get it and bring your reels with ya. We'll take my little boat up to Lake Tugalo if ya like. My wife don't like for me to fish by myself lol.

Check your pm's ;)

Kevin

you could fill up a clorox bottle or something similar with sand or pea gravel and the handle makes for easy handling and something to tie your rope to.
