Do my line selections make sense here for these rods?

Featured Replies

Im no expert, wanted some weight in from expert setter uppers here for smallmouth. Fishing in MI clear and stained lakes, mostly not thick cover.

Im currently using or just spooling up:

Casting:

Dobyns Champion 705CB                      -----   Crankbaits--Sunline Supernatural 12lb

Avid X 7MF                                           -----      Plastics -- Tatsu 12lb

Fenwick Aetos 7MF & Mojo 71 MHMF    -----   Spinnerbaits--  Invisix 15lb

also plan to use above Aetos for up to 1/2oz jigs for now

Spinning:

Avix X 68MXF                -----    Tubes, senkos, light jigs              ----- Invisix 8lb

Legend Tournament Bass----     Drop Shot                                  ----- Invisix 8lb

Elite tech 610MLXF          ----    Back up drop shot and general     ----Sunline Super 6lb or 10-15lb braid-FC leader

Elite tech 7MF                 ----    Back up tubes, cranks, senko, etc ---  Sunline Super 8lb or suffix elite 8lb

I'm no expert either, but it looks good to me.

Perhaps fish it and find out.

Looks good to me! Only thing I might change is I might bump up to 15lb test for the plastics rod if you plan on throwing creature baits, craws, worms, etc. near cover. That 12lb line might not be strong enough to wrestle them out of the thick stuff.

edit: oops just realized that rod was a M and not a MH. I think you’re good man!

I call BS.  You are an expert.

Looks good to me. I use 10-15lb braid on all my spinning rods with a leader. For crank baits 10lb if I want to get deep. Everything else depends on how heavy the cover is and water clarity.

The only thing I might consider changing is using flurocarbon on your Fury 705CB for better depth. However if you only fish shallow water or use the same rod for topwater, mono is also fine. The MF Avid X can also fish a lot of the same lures as well.

Your giant smallmouth photos have determined that this isn't accurate.

I would consider Sunline Armillo 11 lb in lieu of Super Natural 12 lb.

When you say Super does that mean Super Natural mono? If so consider Maxima Ultra Green 5 lb, stronger line with better knot strength plus smaller dia, IMO.

InvisX 15, try 11 lb Armillo good casting line with excellent knot strength or use 12 lb Tatsu to reduce your verity of choices.

Good luck,

Tom
