High Seas Grand Slam Fluorocarbon Coated Line

Featured Replies

Noticed this line recently at a local store and have been scanning through the threads to learn more about it.  Found some experienced proponents like @Russ E and @Bluebasser86.

Very interested in hearing more experiences with it.

I've been using Yo Zuri Hybrid over the past several years based on recommendations a few years ago on Bassresource.

I use it sometimes alone, most often as a leader with braid.  As a weekend warrior, I've been happy with it for those applications.

How does High Seas compare to Hybrid and what are your impressions about abrasion resistance and knot strength? (things I like about Hybrid)

How do you feel about how it handles at different diameters/lb test?

The one negative is It has larger diameter than most pure flourocarbon lines. For the price it is hard to beat. I use the 12 and 15 pound line on my baitcasters. It has good abrasion resistance and knot strength.

It has replaced pure flourocarbon on most of my casting rods.

I also use the 8lb for leaders. It holds up to my Alberto knots better than any flourocarbon I have tried.

I've never liked Hybrid so I can't really give a comparison of the 2. I actually use this line on my shakyhead rod and also a couple jig rods and it does great.

I have to ask, when do you fish shakyheads? I just bought some and I have no idea when/how to fish them.

They're a slow presentation, so they're kind of a target bait, but not something you want to throw into heavy cover. I like to fish points, rock piles, ledges, and sometimes around docks with them. They do tend to hang up in wood and are worthless in grass, so if you have lots of wood or more than a tiny bit of grass, you're probably better suited using something else.

So they're mainly just for structure? I don't know if there's any structure where I fish because I'm stuck on the bank.

@Russ E and @Bluebasser86 thanks guys, sounds like you are covering a fairly broad range of sizes between the two of you.  I will get some and try it out.

I have 8, 10, 15, and 20 pound spools I know for sure and maybe others. It's a very good all around line and I like that I can buy it at Walmart anywhere around here for a reasonable price.

You can fish cover too like docks, rocks, bridge pilings, or individual logs. In ponds or small bodies of water where you don't have a lot of water to cover, you can use them to cast and retrieve slowly wherever you want.

Last year my local walmart had these on sale for $5 a spool so I picked up 8, 10, and 12lb spools.  Only used the 12lb so far for main line and it held up well.    Used the 8 and 10lb for leaders and did pretty well with them.  Very good knot strength.  As someone else noted, their diameter seems to be much higher per pound compared to pure fluoro.

Comparing line diameter to pound test High Seas is one of the largest, equal to Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Line diameter is everything in mono, Copoly and FC lines.

Low refraction of light means nothing to bass but line diameter affects lures action and that can affect bass.
