Do you guys have guides on how to use crankbaits, jerkbaits, worms, jigs, etc, when to use them and when not to? 

 

Someone told me if the water is muddy, use jigs. If the water is clear, use crank bait, etc.

My guide is the cover or structure I'm fishing . When encountering wood  use lures that fish through wood well . Same with vegetation , rock ... If there is sparse cover use lures that will cover water efficiently until you hit cover .  What do you usually encounter on a typical day ?
