Beaver style baits - not just for flippin'?

Recommended Posts

Z-man got me thinking about beavers with all those new models they were highlighting for ICAST.

I mostly fish from the bank or small boats - I flip a bit, but I mostly fish soft plastics on T-rigs, mushroom heads, swim jigs and swing heads.

Favorite beaver style baits?

Aside from flipping, where the application is obvious, wondering how everyone else fishes them?

I use them as jig trailers.  Big fish like them.

I fish them on swinging football heads a ton. They're also a good jig trailer when they don't want a lot of action but want a lot of bulk. They work good on a shakyhead too, especially the smaller sizes.

I’ve caught plenty of bass working the bottom with a Texas rigged D bomb

The Sweet Beaver is my hands down favorite for a swing head jig. I also like using the smaller versions like the Smallie Beaver and Gambler Little Otter on a small football head and dragged over shallow rock flats for smallmouth.

I wanted to try the swinging football heads out this weekend, but misplaced both of the packages I had bought. You use 3/8oz primarily? Do you fish it like a texas rigged creature bait or do you like to slow roll them on the bottom?

I use a 1/4oz almost exclusively and I drag them slowly on the bottom.

I've had good success with a Sweet Beaver rigged on a 1/4 oz. arkie jig head (with a brush guard) and dragging it on the bottom to mimic a crawfish. I use this as a casting presentation rather than flipping/pitching.
