Not Fishing Here for Awhile

Featured Replies

The reservoir where I fish has been contaminated with with toxic algae bloom.

"A confirmed Harmful Algae Bloom is present with levels quantified at or above the NJ Health Advisory Guidance,” a post on the Manasquan Reservoir Facebook page stated.

The post warned people to not drink or make direct contact with untreated water.

“Fish caught in this water body should not be eaten,” the post stated. “Pets and livestock should not contact or drink the water.”

The algae can cause a skin rash if touched, and if water containing the cyanobacteria — also called blue-green algae — is consumed, it can cause abdominal pain, headaches, vomiting, nausea, blistering around the mouth and flu-like symptoms, according to health officials. Pets can also be harmed by the bacteria.

Happens about every summer in the lakes and reservoirs here due to all the agriculture if there isn't a bunch of rain like we had last year. Just don't swim in it, drink it, or eat the fish and you'll be fine. I've had some great days despite blue-green algae blooms. The stuff does stink and the scum line on your boat is awful.
