Crankbaits ... single hook?

Featured Replies

I know a lot of folks on here upgrade the trebles on their crankbaits, but what about replacing them with a single hook?

Will this cause the bait to run incorrectly? Decrease hookup ratio? I was out today and caught a bunch of largemouth bass on a KVD 1.0 around shallow weeds. About 30% had the rear treble stuck on the side of the body somewhere with the front treble in the lip. I think it would be a quicker and cleaner release with a single hook.

...just thinkin’ out loud.

thanks

Joe

Can’t say much about crankbaits, but Owner makes some single hooks which I’ve replaced on my jerkbaits with success.  I like them when fishing stripers and have not seen a decrease in hookups but have made it a lot easier to release them

I've never tried, but I've considered trying to put a single hook on the back of my river cranks.  It seems that nearly every time i catch a smallmouth, they are hooked the way you described.  Sometimes, in the eye. ? What's holding me back is the possibility of losing The Big One.

Owner Single Replacement hook is designed to replace treble hooks on crankbaits.

Make sure you look at their chart for correct size equivalent to treble hook size, they are not size to size; size 1/0 replaces treble sizes 2-4.

You may mis a few strikes and not know it, hooked bass stay hooked better then a treble IMO and a lot safer, especially if you night fish!

As @WRBmention make sure to match single hook size with trebles hook size especially on weight to keep the action close to original. I normally replace only topwater lure since that I use most at night or very early morning. I don’t mess with jerkbait or anything suspended which gonna be harder to match (I did tune my jerkbait to be either suspended on slow float with some weight or split rings).

This lipless you will see some lead weight on front hook.

I don’t see much difference hook up ratio on top water but with this lipless I had lost a few after hook up and a few more bites but no hook up.
