1000 size reels?????

Featured Replies

bought a pflueger summit xt this spring and did not last 3 months. bail broke. Question is i have a sahara 1000fe i use for crappie fishing. its small and light weight and says use mono up to 6# or power pro 10 to 20#. want to put this on Dobyns 704sf  but is 10# braid to much for this pole and reel. I fish alot of weed bottom and lily pads so hang up alot. Will it last or should I get a 2500 reel? thanks

I use up to 20lbs on my 1000 size shimano with no issue.

Just don't lock the drag down.

You shouldn't have any problems with 10 lbs braid though.

I use Shimano 1000s almost exclusively because I like the smaller size vs the 2500. Mostly Stradic Ci4+ or Sahara reels. 10 pound braid on that reel is perfectly acceptable. Could go with 15 or 20 is you wanted more strength to mate with a medium heavy rod and should still be able to get over 100 yards on the reel. Personally I wouldn't go above 15.

The max drag on a 1000 is less then most 2500s, but I have not found that to be much of an issue.

I have several different brands of 100 size reels.   I've used 20 lb braid on all of them - or 14 lb Fireline -e or 6 or 8 lb mono.    No issues.   I use a 1000 size Pflueger President? ( I don't remember the name) on a MH Fenwick HMG rod and I just lock down the drag.  I generally throw a Neko rig or a wacky rig senko.   Never had a situation with a fish where I had to seriously back down on the drag.

1000 sized reel will work great for bass with both mono and braid. It might not balance well with a 7' rod, but in your case, the Sahara isn't the lightest reel, so it should be ok.

I normally run 200 or 300 size Lew's reels, but on my ML rod, it's an older Sahara 1000, currently with 15/4 PP, but soon to get 10/2 PP S8S.

Flooger has a one year warranty.  If it broke after 3 months, I'd take it back.  A 1000 reel is fine for bass.  I use one with 15# braid.  When 4-6# line I prefer a 24500 size reel, since most have a better drag than the single washer 1000 size, and I need to protect the lighter line.
