Hi all, 

   We are thinking of getting new floors in our house. Vinyl sheet flooring ( used to be called linoleum?) seems an inexpensive way to go.  To anyone who has gotten new vinyl sheet floors, are you glad you did, any issues, problems? I understand these have to be professionally installed but any floor we get would have to be, ( bad back on my part).

  Both are good, but beware of "inexpensive". If I were to do it all over again, I would go commercial grade vinyl ONLY, Here's a short blurb:

One of my real good friends runs a flooring business, both residential and commercial. The new vinyl stuff is light years ahead of the old linoleum stuff. It is amazing how good some of it looks. It is super easy to clean and very hard to mess up. Very scratch resistant. As said though, do not get the cheap stuff and make sure you get a quality installation crew.

Agreed. Get quality stuff. It's older now but the best stuff I had was an Armstrong that wasn't a layer on top of a brown substrate. The material went through from top to bottom and it was fairly thick and stiff. A good linoleum looks good once put down.

Run away from the sheet flooring.  The new vinyl is now available in planks.  As everyone else has said, buy the heavier mil stuff and you will not be disappointed.

Couldn't agree more. Floor prep is everything and a smooth surface is a must.

 

I actually like the LVT's (luxury Vinyl Tile) that are out now. About a year ago, I pulled up my sheet vinyl floor in the kitchen and put in a 6" x 36" vinyl plank. It was a commercial grade with a wear top that's supposed to last 15 years with normal wear and tear. I put it down with pressure sensitive adhesive to keep it from shifting. One day, something sharp was dragged on the floor and damaged a plank/tile. I was timed: The old tile was removed and replaced with new in 27 seconds. You can't do that with sheet vinyl. The color selection is way better with LVT. Rip up, surface prep and install took me a day in a room that was 12 x 12.
