St. Croix Pro Glass Rods?

Featured Replies

I have 2 of these from the early 2000s. Both are 6’ 6”.

One is a Mod action rated for 1/4-3/4 oz. lures.

The other is a ML Moderate action rated for 1/8-1/2 oz. lures.

Was going to set up the Mod rod as an all purpose crank rod, even up to deep divers, using 10-12# copoly line.

The ML Mod rod would be set up as an all purpose rip bait rod using 10# copoly.

Would these setups get the job done?

Thanks....Joe

You say one is ML/M (Moderate). The other one must be Medium/Mod from your description. At least that's what I would guess. If that's the case, then 12 lb. on the M/M and 10 lb. on the ML/M would be just about perfect for the way I set them up and use them. Good rods!

I have a med mod-fast  St Croix Premier glass that is 6'6", so probably similar and rated for 1/4-3/4 lures. Really it is a target caster/square bill/buzz bait/lipless crank rod. Too short for deep divers. Great rod though.

When you say too short are you talking casting distance?

Yes you really need a 7' or longer to get the casting distance for the deep divers

Thank you. It looks like I can use it for the purpose I asked about in my OP knowing that casting distance is an issue. At least until I can get a longer rod! Looking at something in the newer St. Croix rods.

Tom,

Above is my original post. Will be using these until I can step up to a 7'. Looking at the St. Croix Avid Crankbait series to put on a wish list to replace the above rods. One would be the MH Mod, the other the M Mod.

Another consideration would being able to use the rods for underspins, chatter baits, and swim baits on weighted hooks. Nothing really big, 3-5" trailers and paddle tails.

There are very few ML casting rods and the reason for my question was the line size didn't seem appropriate for spinning reels.

I haven't pick up or handled St Croix Glass series rods and have no idea how the power rating compares to other glass or composite crankbait rods.

The old Pro Glass rods were excellent cranking rods. I owned a couple of them and wish I still had them but both suffered untimely ends. I don't know that I'd want to use one for rip baits (jerkbaits I'm assuming) as they're fairly heavy and it could be kind of fatiguing to do it for long with one. They weren't great for deep runners either. Their wheelhouse was really the squarebill baits to baits that ran to around 10-12 feet.
