Rod choice for Shimano spin reel

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm getting back into fishing and need a new reel and rod. I am thinking of the Nasci by Shimano, but am not sure about which rod to pair it with. I have seen the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2 Spinning Rod, is that one any good? I live down in Socal, and do mostly frshwater fishing, and some light ocean fishing. My budget is under 200 for all, and am hoping to spend no more than 60-100 on a rod.

Thanks

Welcome aboard!

Bass Pro makes some fine rods. I've used from the Graphite models

up to the Carbonlites, tho not all in between. I'd be fine with the PQ2

having handled them in the store. They feel like previous years'

Carbonlites.

And FWIW, $60-100 is kind of a sweet spot for rods. So many good

and dependable models to choose from.

Any decent rod with stainless steel guides will do. I've seen good things about Star, Tsunami, and the cheaper Shimano rods. Was considering the Shimano Convergence before I got my Penn Battle II combo. When you say light ocean, will you be doing any combat fishing (dragging fish out/away from cover/structure)? If not, a ML or M will be just fine. Just make sure the rods weight isn't too heavy and balances well with your reel. If not you'll regret your mistake after chucking and winding for a few hours (ask me how I know, lol).

Do you say the penn battle II is pretty strong and rust/corrosive resistant? by "light ocean", i meant pier and dock fishing.

I would pair the Penn with a daiwa fuego  FG711MFS rod or something thats good

Yep. The Battle II has sealed bearings and a very sturdy aluminum frame, which I don't think is present in the NASCI. I was thinking about getting a NASCI but read reviews with concern about frame flexing while fighting big fish. The Battle II weighs a couple ounces more than the NASCI, but it's not bad. A happy medium would probably be the Daiwa BG (sealed, aluminum frame, and light weight). Overall, my Battle II 3000 has been great and I would buy another. Would definitely handle your inshore pier and dock fishing needs with ease. I wouldn't hesitate to do light offshore fishing with it either.

I bought my Battle II as a combo and the rod it came with is rated at ML. It has handled small snook and nice spotted sea trout with ease so I think it would be a good starter set up. For $130, it is a great deal but I do want to get a better rod eventually.

Take a look at Shimano Sphereos spinning reels made for fresh and salt water use.

Depending on what line you choose determines reel size and line capacity.

The rod needs to be compatible with line size, larger guides on inshore rods vs smaller giudes for light line used with fresh water spinning rods.

That reel will pair nicely with a Shimano Zodias if that's in your budget. Recently I've went through, sold all else, and replaced everything with the Zodias series.....they're that good. Within them you'll find a lot of the trickle down components from the Expride lineup, so they feel great and are sensitive. The reel seat is also very comfortable for spinning setups.

I have the nasci/ carbonlite 2.0 medium set up.  It’s a great combo I like it allot. I only fresh water fish though. It’s $220.

I have a nasci -  it is an ok reel - what I don't like about it is that it doesn't have an anti-reverse switch.

I've got no experience in saltwater/fresh water cross over stuff, I'll leave that to smarter folds than me.

If it was me though, I'd have separate fresh water & saltwater rigs.

I have decided to getthe penn battle 2 and was thinking of using a daiwa fuego 7'1 rod with medium action. Is this a good idea?

That sounds like it would be a great combo.
